Canon 300mm f/4 L (non IS) Hood repair/removal

Hi all,
I've a Canon 300mm f/4 L USM lens, not the IS model, and the hood is a little loose and slides up and down on it's own. Seems to have very little restriction holding it still.

Does anyone know how to remove the hood?

I always get great service from Canon Elstree, maybe a call to them?
Looking round the net it doesnt seem to be a user fixable item.

I like to fix things myself, but I know when to leave things to someone who knows better.
I was hoping it would be easy to remove (probably is if you know how) but I'll get upset if I break it.
 
If it's the same design as the IS version (and the 400/5.6) then it's quite a simple task to remove it.

You need to remove the protective rubber from the front end of the hood. Just inside the front end there's a thin ring with several small slots (look very closely).....using a suitable tool, unscrew this ring (it looks similar to a filter thread). Once removed, you slide the remaining part of the hood backwards off the lens (having first removed the tripod ring).

Rubber surround comes off and I can see the ring with slots, how tight should this be? I'm putting quite a lot of effort and it's not moving, I assume it's normal thread rotation?
 
Ok, got it, bloody tight is the answer!
 
Indeed it had. Cheers for the help, got it off ok but it's only a friction slider so probably needs new felt to work properly (can't complain at 23 years old!). I assumed it was a twist to hold type and thought it was broken.
