Thought I'd see what sort of image you could get from putting both a 1.4x and a 2x teleconverter together onto the lens. Not the greatest or most interesting shot you'll ever see, but shows it can be done. This was in quite poor light too.

This is hand-held, but the data is showing only 600mm?
Anyone any ideas why?

I've tried that too with 2x 2x extenders and it only shows 600mm

I'd guess that the middle converter passes through information that says "I have a Canon 300mm f2.8 attached" and the first TC tells the camera "I am a 2x TC". Hence the result.

In other words, the middle converter doesn't add anything to the info.

Just guessing.

Of course you could partly prove this by swapping the 1.4 and 2.0 over so that the 1.4 is attached to the camera. I'd guess it would then report a 420mm.

I've used this combo with good results to take some moon shots. I'm amazed at just how good it is!

I think this is probably the case, although I think there was only one way of attaching the TC's. I'll see when I get home later.

Not thought of Moon shots. I'll give that a try. Cheers.

dont bother trying if you have the mk3 2x as they redesigned the thing to not allow it to take the 1.4x :(
