canon 300mm f4 IS USM

It will work fine, but the crop factor means it will be the equivalent of a 480mm lens on a 35mm or full frame camera.
 
It will fit and work absolutely fine. On the 450d a 300mm lens will be equivalent to 480mm due to it's 1.6 crop factor. It is a very nice lens from all accounts.

Owned it in the past - really nice lens. Has the unique ability to act like a macro one second taking photos of butterflies (due to very close focussing ability) and then be a wildlife lens the next with it's reasonable pull, especially on a 1.6x.

It also takes the 1.4x extender very well - checkout the shots on this gallery. They were almost all taken with the 300L some with 1.4x mounted. (EXIF all displayed on right hand side)
