There are lots of comments about differences in quality between copies. Is this still the same or have Canon got their act together. It's just they have them in argos for a reasonable price and 6months interest free on the card.
 
We got ours a while back and it was immense straight out of the box. Works really well with 1.4TC also

Whats it like with the 1.4 compared to a 100-400 on its own at the long end?

The 300 we had took a 1.4TC without any real noticeable loss in IQ - it was defo sharper and more contrasty than our 100-400 at 400/420.

However, the 100-400 is still great and has added flexibility.
 
Cool. I not fused about the flexibility as I have a ff and a crop and a 100 so with a 300 and a tc I think I could be sorted for most stuff.
 
I love the 300. I used it exclusively for wildlife for a couple of years until I got the 500. The majority of the time it had the 1.4 attached and there was no major loss in quality. I love the flexibility of it and just how lightweight it is. Although I haven't used it in the best part of 2 years I'm still keeping it, I like it that much. Its excellent for close up work.

I think I'm sold on it. Would you definitely say its worth using the canon tc with it as opposed to a 3rd party one?

Really? "Lots" of comments? 99% of the comments I see about this lens say that it is brilliant (which I would agree with).

£1025 ??!!! That is an excellent price. I was pretty pleased to get one from Warehouse Express recently for £1115.
 
I see you have bought one Andy, good choice. With regards to TC I am a believer in Canon lens therefore Canon converter but I know people have good experiences with the Kenkos

I love mine, and will only get rid of it to upgrade to the 500mm though even then I'd be tempted to still keep it.

It takes the Canon 1.4x II TC very well.
 
I bought a kenko dgx for 102 new so it will keep me going at least as I haven't the money really now for some reason........
 
I find the 300 f4 i.s a great little lens when i upgraded to the 300mm f2.8 i.s i kept the f4 it is great for flight shots on the 7D and very light to boot

Nice shot. Yeah I can't wait for it to come and then I'm going in hols soon to st. Ives so I can use it.

Try around the harbour wall you get turnstones there you don't really need a 300mm though

Guess what arrived at Oggy Towers yesterday afternoon. :cool:

Then the bank holliday weather arrived. :'(

I would be interested to know how you get on with yours. Initial impressions of mine are that it is very good.
 
My initial impressions are good too. Can you tell me what yours is like noise wise as it kind of makes a click when you activate it.i wouldn't say its really loud but I'm just checking that's normal and that they all do it. It focuses so fast and the colour, contrast, sharpness and bokeh seem fantastic so I'm a happy bunny.
 
I currently don't have a grip on my 50d. Do you think it would benefit with having it with the 300mm?
 
Yeah it's a loud lens when IS kicks in. A definite clunk.

A grip will certainly make the set up feel better balanced.

If you use the joystick at all with your thumb then make sure you try a grip out first. The addon grips aren't quite as streamlined as the larger 1D bodies and as such can prevent you from reaching it with your thumb in portrait mode. Obviously your hand size matters, but worth checking if you use the joystick for AF point selection as I do.
 
Yeah I get that with the 5d and its really irritating so I may not bother. Bad design really as I would like it for the stability and the longer battery life. Hmmmmm
 
I had a chance yo have a quick go with the 300. Not brilliant light.

I am quite pleased for a first go. The one thing which slightly caught me out was the DOF at short range.

Yes you will find that wait till you get chance to try a 600mm f4 i.s.
But good first outing considering the light
