Canon 300mm F4 - whats it worth?

Hi all,

I've currently got the above lens which I've had for quite some time and love to bits, however its really not getting the use and I could do with a bit extra cash.

Someone I work with has enquired and says they'd be willing to pay £750 for it but I'm thinking thats probably undervaluing it by quite a bit.

Brand new it looks like the best price is just over £1000, though I suspect Kerso could probably beat this, so what do people reckon its worth?

Mint condition by the way, not a mark on it, with the Canon case that it comes with.

I'm thinking more like the £850 - £900 mark - would you agree with that?

Cheers,
Andy

I recently valued mine at £820, posted.... I think.

Like yours, couldn't find a mark on it and it's capped, in the case and boxed.

Well done if you go through with it. Kinda almost hoping that no-one sees my for sale thread as whist I don't use it much, I do like it..... lots.

I recently sold one to Dod...£600 as it was an early one (UL coded 1997). Dod has since sold it to Hermes for the same price and it now looks like Hermes will be passing it on too....well travelled.

Not sure you would get £850-900 when Kerso new is £930, but who knows in the current market, there are some real crazy prices being paid for SH goods.

You can import it for £880 which is what i done, so i'd say about 700 - 750 is a fair price if it's in good condition ...

I think I paid 700 for mine a few months back in excellent condition (case included). I thought I had done well and saved £50 or so. I bought a Sigma 300/2.8 with a view to selling the f4, but the Canon is sharper so I'm going to sell the Siggy instead.

Thanks for the replies.

That seems fair enough. Absolute top price I could ever be hoping for is £800 then so the original offer isn't far off in that case, interesting.

And yes, it is the IS version, bought it in March last year.

To sell or not to sell though, it is very, very nice.......

Yep, even allowing for the age that one was a bargain for the condition of it :)

Thats interesting, thought the sigma 300 f2.8 had some really good reviews, Ok not in the class of the canon 300mm f2.8 (twice the price), but an affordable option with similar IQ's to the canon. Was considering that as an option, but perhaps wait until prices of the canon 300mm f2.8 come down abit (best at the moment is £3100 from Kerso compared with £3600 UK prices)

Personally I think the 300mm f4 is a really great lens

And to think I sold my 300 F4 IS for 590 shipped just before Christmas!

Someone got a bargain!

Bearing in mind I only paid £680 for it from Kerso including delivery I shouldn't be too fussed, but know how much the camera bodies I've had have depreciated, it would be nice to get a little bit of profit back :D

errr..... :bonk:

I'll offer you £550 for it right now.

Mike.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the last bit - the Siggy is a fine lens, but the 300/4 is really great. I was very happy with the Siggy's shots until I compared against the Canon's. If you would like to try out the Siggy let me know (I'm in north London)
