The Sigma seems to be less than 300mm (as was the non-OS model)

The Sigma is indeed very impressive for a zoom and for the price it costs!

The difference in size is exaggerated by the distance this was shot at (just under 5m) and the usage of the 2x TC but the Sigma is, indeed, shorter than 300mm. How much I cannot tell exactly as this was a test for quality, the difference in the magnification just happened to come up when looking at the shots later on.
 
Have you got 'bare' lens shots, and sigma with 2x III?

Mind you these look a little soft, but canon at 6.3 is becoming very good. Maybe this is what 7D looks like? Sometimes interpolation can do a better job than a TC...

I am afraid I did not have the time for more shots. More to come later :)

From my experience I always got better detail with the TC and a good lens rather than interpolation
 
The 120-300 OS is a cracking lens. My only issue with it is the pathetic 50p plastic lens hood that Sigma now supply, instead of making a decent quality metal one that every other 300mm+/2.8 on the planet comes with.

It really is very tatty for a £2k bit of kit.
 
The Canon hood on the 300mm 2.8 is £350 to replace which I know because I almost lost one. I'd like to see real world shots with these lenses though, to my eye the Sigma looks about 275-280mm though?

Am I reading these right - other than mag factor the sigma can almost hold its own with the new 300 f2.8 prime - that can't be right can it???

I have wanted a 300/2.8 for ages but now Sigma looks the business due to added zoom flexibility.

Nice one Micloi thanks for posting - I could get a 120-300 plus 7D and have change from a 300/2.8??

Having tried both I would say

+Sigma
1. Much better at 120-299mm :)
2. Much better value

+Canon
1. Sharper, especially with the 2x
2. Faster AF, especially with v3 canon TCs
3. Lighter

Both great lenses and, if I could, I would have both for different times
 
So basically the Canon is better on all but price ;)

And yes real world subjects in a comparison pretty please.. And I don't mean brick walls (but I'll allow it).
 
Canon 300mm @ 1680mm (3 stacked TC's: Kenko 2x DG, Canon 2x III, Canon 1.4x III - Extension tubes, 12mm and 24mm, are used between the 1.4x and the 2x III and then between the 2x III and the 2x DG)
OPEN WIDE (f16)

Same test to follow with the Sigma tomorrow, watch this space!

Canon is def sharper to my eyes but at the end of the day it depends on how deep your pockets are.

I really am tempted by the Sigma ... just don't know if I would get the use out of it due to the weight/me being a lazy git ratio. :lol:
 
Michael you can see the sigma falling off there alot but still better than i expected and the canon does as amazing job and does as it should. thanks for this, i had a play with a 120-300mm and a siggy 2x the other day and the added length over the 50-500mm was nice af seemed fast but pictures seemed nice and sharp stopped down to f6.3 and they were just awsome but all the pics had a colour cast, i checked all the setting and everything was spot on could that have been the tc doing it.
 
Sigma 120-300mm at 1680mm with Kenko 2x, Canon 2x III and Canon 1.4x III (12mm extension tube between the 2 canon TC's).

On a tripod with remote shutter release.

when you're at that kind of effective focal length atmospheric distortions must start to take a toll on resolution when shooting fairly distance subjects.
