Great lens, was my main sport / aviation lens until I upgraded last year to the bigger brother. The f4 works very well with the canon 1.4x TC, but you do need the light to get the best from that combo.

Mine is fairly quiet, you can hear it but only just and it sounds smooth if that helps.
It's a fantastic lens, I am sure you will enjoy it.

This definitely clunks a bit, I'm also not so sure that it's not focusing in front of where it should be.

The clunk is possibly the IS activating.
