I currently have an EOS 30D and 100-300 USM. However, I'm hankering after some L:love:, so I was thinking, sell the 30D and 100-300, buy a cheap 10D or older which are about £100, and put the rest of the proceeds and bit I've saved to an L 70-200 F4. Its the only way I'd be able to afford an L for a while, so I'm thinking about this.

Anyone have any views on this?;)

a 70-210 f3.5/4.5 is supposed to be near L quality, much less expensive, one on e-bay at present. I just bought one, awaiting delivery (£200 buy-it-now, couldnt be ar5ed to wait on an auction), Will review when it arrives.

I wouldnt drop from 30d to 10d to afford an L glass, as much as I 'want' an L lens I just dont think dropping to a 10d is the way to go (and yes I have a 10d in my bag, but my son has a 20d and that is so much a better camera).Turn on time is quite slow on the 10d, image quality is very good but the later models also accept ef-s lens whereas the 10d doesnt.

A member on this forum got a 70-200f4L for £280 collected, in pristine condition and I think there was one for sale on here that went for about the same price...

I would agree with above, that overall a 30D would be better than 10D with the better glass, so would suggest you save and save

edit ...ive just seen you wanted ad. Have you had a bump on the head lately?

Your thinking of going back to the dXX range

Be patient and wait

Thanks for the advice guys. ;)

@dcash, I was thinking about it...had a D30 years ago, it wasn't all theat bad... Though I have now archived thats thread, I wanted one too much at that moment, thinking sensibly now!

@Mark, I know, I saw that 70-200 go, that was the bargain of the year! I will save instead of downgrading.

@Matt I'd be very interested in hearing about it when you get it..though I'm really aiming for white...but if it is as good, then I may well...

Thanks ;)

10d or 30d no matter with this lens you will always get top end results, although i do prefer the 30d only for the screen. Your choice man either way you cant lose

I think you've got a serious case of lens envy here that your wallet really can't afford. I can't really understand why your so desperate for L yes it will take slightly nicer pictures and be built like a tank but it's not going to improve your photography that much in the grand scheme of things.

I wish I could justify spending loads of money on L glass but I like many on here can so we make do with what we can get which is why my mid range telephoto is a 25 year old 70-210 f4 which might not be quite L lens sharp but for £70 it is a stonking bargin and even the ever popular Ken Rockwell agrees with me http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/70-210mm.htm

Think laterally there are some pretty decent older lenses out there that will get you a decent percentage of L lens performance for a fraction of the cost. the 70-210 F4, the 70-210 f3.5-4.5 and the 24-85 f3.5-4.5 being great examples.

The 10D was a good camera when it was released - I used mine lots. But the 30D is a lot better. It has improved noise handling, better autofocus amongst other things.

Look at what you would gain with the 70-200F4 vs what you would loose by downgrading your camera. The suggestion above of the 70-210 is a good one, but to be honest the 100-300mm USM isn't that bad either!

Are you 100% certain that the 70-200F4 will improve your results?

sorry for late reply. Well, I've got a lot to think about, I just thought the L would give me appreciably sharper results from hat I've heard, and I do notice a little doftness from my 100-300. hmmmm...

The 70-210 f3.5/4.5 I have just bought seems very good, especially for £200 and tbh I'm pretty picky about IQ
Be careful with an F4 push/pull the copy I have seems poor, maybe it was knocked but it looks liek every shot has been 'zoomed' with the oof stuff very odd.
I tried it on a tripod, miror lockup and timed release but still it looks abit suspect, I am sure there are some good examples out there though.

Thanks Matt, I will do some research. :)
