Canon 350D - almost dead; but not quite

My daughters 350D almost works. It seems to focus but will not take a pictre. The small LCD panel is working but doesn't have the usual information on it.

We've tried all the usual things like battery out, different lens, changed the CF card etc.

Anyone come accress this before? Was there an answer? Is there a factory reset? Can I reload the software?

All ideas welcome.

A little more info on what's on the display and what the settings are when the camera will not take the shot might help.

Other than that, maybe something has been changed, is there a "reset to default settings" option in the menu?
 
To reset it, turn the camera on, go to the second settings menu (all the way on the left in orange, indicated by a wrench, hammer and a number 2) and select "clear settings"

Can't actually get to the proper menu. In fact, can't get anything to appear on the main LCD screen. So there is no indication of what the camera is doing.

Can't get to the menu. I was wondering if there is a sort of 're-set' button anywhere hidden on the camera.
 
There should be a small date/time battery slot somewhere in the battery compartment.
Take this and the normal battery out and leave it for 5 minutes or so and it should do a "hard reset", then put them back in and try starting up again.

You say the usual information isn't on the small LCD panel, so what is it displaying?
 
may be the button battery that's dead!
 
That occurred to me, but I can't see why that would stop the camera shooting, it would just reset itself every time it was turned off.
 
Hiya All

I've tried removing both batteries and leaving them out for a while. I also took the precausion to fully charge the main battery. I have to say that it does seem to have improved matters as the camera seems to do almost verything other than take the actual picure.

It focuses and the small LCD screen looks normal as does the information in the view finder. Just now shutter release. ??
 
Another strange thing is that when the camera is switched off, the small LCD stays on.
