Canon 350D not focusing

went out today with the wife to shoot some pictures but on arrival there the camera would just not focus at all, on pressing the button half way down the lens slowly twists back and forward but wont focus at all. In the end i put it down to drained batteries, i have come home, charged the batteries but alas its like looking through vaseline, any ideas.

And with fresh batteries it performs at the same slow speed? So it is on AF on the lens and it does try to focus? Have you tried a different lens? Try cleaning the contacts on the lens and body mount points. Does it perform ok on manual focus and function ok otherwise? Can you shoot bursts with no slow down?

Sounds like an autofocus issue with the lens rather than the body. The best way to test would be to try another lens, or try the lens in question on another camera body if possible. As stated above, try cleaning the contacts on the camera and lens. Put the lens into manual focus mode and move the focus ring, see if there's any resistance.

i getting really worried now, just put another lens on the camera but this wont focus either, so i take it its got to be the camera, right.
dont know what to do for the best, just cleaned the contacts, charged the batteries, what else can i do.

ok just put it into manual setting and turned the focus ring, i couldn't get it to focus either.

Last ditch attempt but try and remove the backup battery from the slide out tray (should be in the same compartment as the Li-Ion battery) to reset the camera. May not make any difference but it's worth a go as a very last resort. With the same happening on another lens it sounds as though there's a lack of juice going to the lens from the camera body.

If you've tried numerous batteries with the same results then sounds like a faulty camera body.

Eye Diopter been adjusted?

Don't think that would affect autofocus however. Do you have enough light and subject contract to test it at the moment - if too dark and little contrast might not help autofocus.

Hmm just re-read the OPs last response, if you're unable to focus manually then as as above try adjusting the eyepiece diopter. I can't think of anything else it could be?!

spot on adjusted it and so far seems to work.

many thanks matty, good to be around again. I must admit i dont take as many photo's as i used to, but it was really fun in here. I must look around and see who is still here from the 'Bad' old days.
