Canon 35L vs Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art

Thinking about getting either the Mark 1 Version 35L or Sigma 35 Art, but looking to hear from folk who’ve had both and can comment on their differences.

I believe the Canon has better AF, but both are pretty on par for picture quality...?
 
I've only had the art and would not change a single thing about it . It's a stunning lens and my best performer . (Against 6 L lenses )
 
I've got a canon mount sigma 35mm art and it is an amazing lens, verging on perfect. I'd actually place the image quality above a canon 300mm 2.8 ii that I owned at the same time.

The only thing I've heard is the af can need calibrating but I had no issues.

I shoot Nikon now but keep forgetting to put it up for sale...

You can get the mounts used. I have the Sigma ART 35 and its performance edge to edge dusts the 24-70 at 35mm. I have Sigma ART 50 and 24 too :D
 
I tried the siggy art 35, no doubt it is sharp, in fact very sharp. I didn't like it though, difficult to describe but the images produced were just too clinical for want of a better phrase. If being sharp is the only or main criteria then this is probably the lens to get.

Not Sigma Art related but on the general subject of very good modern lenses...

I must admit that I'm struggling to decide what I like and want. I have some very nice and very good modern lenses and some old film era lenses and the look they give can be very different with the look given by the no doubt less technically good old lenses suiting some pictures and the more clinical and technically excellent modern lenses suiting others.

The look is IMO definitely something to think about. As someone once said, you pay your money and take your choice.
 
One thing to consider is the huge RRP of the Canon 35 L

If it needed a repair the cost could be greater than a brand new 35 ART since the parts carry a hideous price tag no doubt

Dunno, lovely colours come off it. Compared it side by side with the 24-70 and for landscapes its brilliant.
 
Well there’s one thing for certain, going for the Sigma is not a bad choice and worth a try at least.

I've had the Canon 35L for years. It's my favourite prime.
It's pin sharp, produces beautiful colours, smooth bokeh and the AF is lightning fast, rarely misses a beat. I love the 35 focal length, much prefer it over the 50, so I use this lens a lot.
Having said that, I have only heard good things about the Sigma...you probably can't go wrong with either, unless you get a faulty copy, as someone mentioned, in which case it might be best to have the Sigma.
 
Optically, the Sigma 35/1.4 Art beats the Canon Mk1 hands down. The Mk1 is a very old design, flarey wide open and prone to purple fringing among other things.

It's replacement was long overdue and with the Canon 35/1.4 Mk2 Canon has jumped from bottom of the pile straight to the top. It's one of Canon's best lenses ever

But the Sigma 35/1.4 Art runs it close optically, feels very well made even if it lacks the Canon Mk2's military grade build quality. Unless you definitely need the Canon's extra robustness, the additional cost is hard to justify.

I see a few places have it for £549 right now, which isn't far off the best ever price, going by CameraPriceBuster, so I may very well up with a new Sigma 35:cool:
 
I have the Sigma Art 35mm on my 5d3. Its cracking, pin sharp, nice booked, can't really go wrong at all. Had it a year now and really very happy with it.
