I have found that although a superb cheap bit of kit, the 50mm f1.8 is just a bit too long for my needs on a crop.

I am thinking of replacing it with a 35mm f2.

Couple of questions...

Micro motor... I assume they both use the same type of motor and neither is quicker or any more quiet than the other?

Would I notice a big difference between f1.8 and f2.0?

Anything else I shoudl consider when thinking about the change?

At what aperture does the 35 f/2 start to get really good?
I am thinking that the 50/1.8 doesn't start to get too sharp until f/2, f/2.2 what is the equivalent?

35 2 is good value and a good focal length for crop. I never used my nifty 50 because it was too long so got a Sigma 30 1.4 which was great, but I never used that either!

I'd prefer the 28 1.8 but it's a lot more money. If you want absolutely max shallow depth of field there's a small difference at f/1.8 but it's very small in reality and nothing in exposure terms.

op sounds like me... I ahve the nifty 50 in the bag cus its small but it is a little long.. have been looking for a replacement... I ahve the canon 24-70L but its too big for its limited use

i'll have it if you like :-)

I find that 35mm on crop sensor is just about perfect for general purpose. Would highly recommend that focal length.

Cheers for the tips - I got the 35mm and very happy so far!
