Canon 400D and 550D

Just a general questions really.

I purchased a 150-500mm Sigma the other day and the quality of shots doesnt seem to be as good on my 400D.

When I went to the shop to try the lens they didnt have any 400D bodies so they put the lens on the 550D saying that it would be the same for my 400D however I am now thinking that it might of been a bit of selling blurb....

Any thoughts appreciated :)
 
optically the lens will be the same but image wise it wont be, the 550D has better noise handling and nearly twice the resolution with 18MP vs only 10MP on your 400D
 
Therefore, if i am using it for wildlife, when i crop or zoom in on the actual image then im really going to notice it?!

As this is when i notice the image isnt as good as when i tried it in the shop, as they uploaded the image onto the computer screen and zoomed in to show me the quality.

I kinda feel like I have been mis-sold the lens when they knew I had the 400D
 
I wouldn't have expected the image difference to be that great between the 400 and 550 to be honest. The 400 is capable of producing very good images as is the lens.

What do you feel is wrong with lens? Post some photos...
 
It was purchased from a Camera shop down in Exeter. I have contacted them to see what they say. I would post some of the photos i have taken but they were so rubbish they got deleted straight away from the computer. And it would be hard for you to see the difference when you dont have the 550D to compare the photos with.

I just feel that the sharpness isnt the same, and especially when cropping the image, you lose the detail. But i was told that this wouldnt be much different on my camera to the one tried in the store. Will see if i have time to take some photos tomorrow.

The lens was only purchased last Thursday so its brand new practically. I could solve the problem by purchasing the 550D but im reluctant to spend more just so the lens works as demo'd in the store.
 
I don't think it will be the camera.....it may be that you have a bad copy of the lens......I would take it back to the shop and test the lens there on a variety of cameras inc your own and compare results. Poor copies of Sigma lenses are not unheard of.

At least then you would be able to make a judgment call as to whether it is the camera or the lens at fault before you go and spend more money on a different camera.

Yes if your zooming into it you will notice, with almost half the density of pixels heavy cropping will show less detail.

It may be though that it needs calibrating for your camera you can check the focus yourself at home to make sure its accurate, just search the forum for how to do it.

I would not say however you where miss sold it as such, you should really have taken your camera in and tried with it though.
 
If the lens is not resolving properly on your 400D, it won't do on 550D either. If the issue is due to focus error (very probable but need to see samples to confirm it) - better send the lens to Sigma for re-calibration or look for a body with AF-micro adjust (550D won't help here). You may also think about 400mm prime as a better alternative.

If they were really that rubbish it wouldnt matter what we compared it to, we'd just know something wasnt right. What daugirdas said is right. With 10 mega pixels, your 100% view isnt going to be as 'zoomed-in' as with 18mp. So if the lens was just soft, 100% view on a 550d would look softer than a 400d. As its the other way around it sounds like it could be a calibration issue.
