I recently invested in some good second hand canon gear, and was thinking about getting a battery grip for the 400d.

i see the canon branded one comes in around 100 quid, but there are some really cheap alternatives on ebay - some as low as 30 quid.

can anyone offer advice on these ?

I've got one of the Chinese copies and it's absolutely fine - good quality and does everything you could want. Comes with trays for Canon batteries as well as AAs.

In fact, they messed up and accidentally sent me the one with the built-in timer functions (I'd deliberately not ordered this one as I thought the grip would be less comfortable but it's actually fine) and I've had a bit of fun using it to create time-lapse sequences overnight. You can set time interval, number of repetitions as well as controlling exposure length if you're in bulb mode.

Personal preference really, but I'd stick to a genuine grip. They seem to pop up 2nd hand for reasonable money on occasions

I ended up buy myself a genuine canon grip for my 400d from ebay second hand *** it came it was like brand new and i only paid £40.00 for it, keep ** eyes peeled :eek::eek:

+1 for the cheap ones from ebay here :)

I bought one for £8 I think at around this time last year and it works absolutely fine, it allows for two canon batteries and also another cartridge into which you can put 6 aa's
