Hi folks

I recently acquired a 400d and sigma lens ( 2 seperate purchases) i am getting the error99 message so i am off to Jessops this morning to look at a new lens.
A. to establish if the problem is the old lens or the camera ( dont really know how old the lens is as it was a 'gift'/ pass down, i have cleaned the contacts as per google search and
B. I would like a more basic lens (thie sigma is 70-200). The main use, while i am learning, will be photos of the kids and while out and about.

Do you think the standard kit lens would be the best i.e. 18-55mm, i am a real novice at this and learning my way around terminology and the camera.

Thanks in advance

You've already got a camera but it explains quite a few common questions.

As to the error the lens is probably quite old and does not have the right chip inside it to work with the camera. It may be possible to send it back to Sigma for updating but I'll leave a full answer to those that know more about it.

Thank you, very useful pages.

I had almost come to the conclusion/ was hoping it was going to be the age of the lens causing the problem so i thought trying out a new one in the shop with my body would help eliminate that, and get me started too.
Thanks again for taking the time to answer.
