hi another nooby here, i've just purchased a 400d with 3 x lenses:
1. canon 18-55mm 2. canon 75-300mm 3. canon 28-135 ultrasonic with image stabiliser.
what i need to know is, are these lenses gonna be ok for my needs which is mainly motorcycle racing, there will ofcourse be some static stuff in the pits / paddock etc.
thanks in advance for any help / advice (cos trust me i need it, i've never seen so many buttons on one camera lol)

many thanks keith.....

Welcome to the forum mate. I have the 28-135 and it's a really nice lens. I am sure you have the reach you need with the 75-300 but you might need something quicker to stop the action. I am sure there will be a few suggestions on this thread in the next wee while.

For a beginner your lenses are adequate, however dont expect show stopping results until you at least understand the basic principles of photography and especially how to use your camera.

The first thing I would suggest you do is try and speak with other DSLR users in your area either via photography meets or a camera club and learn the basics. Reading the manual that came with your camera is a good start too.
With no affiliation whatsoever I can recommend Experience Seminars who are a canon focussed training company who can teach you all you need to know about your camera and how to use it. Courses cost around the £150 mark per day but you can get them cheaper through the week and well recommended.

Next thing you need to do is start looking in the motorsport section and looking at the posts in there.

But for now start googling and reading and enjoying your new toy!

Hope this helps

Hi Keith. All #7 fans welcome here

In terms of range, you have a very useful set of lenses there for bikes. Although the 28-135 appears to duplicate, it may be better than the 18-55 if you don't need the wide end, and it has IS (the newer 18-55 IS version is much better).

You will need the 75-300 on track, and sometimes wish it was longer, but things get very expensive over 300mm. That is not a stella lens. It's servieable enough, but if you get into it the much newer Canon 70-300 4-5.6 IS will bring a smile to your face.

thanks for the replies so far, can you tell me what lens/lenses you would reccomend for the bikes (panning etc) without getting into silly money ?

a couple more of the many questions i need to ask, is it possible to carry out a shutter count on the 400D, also is it possible / safe to carry out a proper veiwfinder clean........

many thanks for any advice

Just tried the above software and it worked fine on Canon 450D
You need to have installed Canon EOS Utility software first for it to work.

thanks, but just noticed this:

It will not work on the 1D*, 5D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 300D, 350D, and 400D. It's not that I have anything against the owners of those cameras, but simply that the Canon SDK does not support retrieving the shutter count for them.

Sorry KRO, I did not read it properly & only tried it on 450D :bonk:

"I have a 1D*/5D/10D/20D/30D/50D/300D/350D/400D/450D/1000D. Will the software work with it?

This works on any of the Canon DIGIC III/IV DSLRs except the 1D* series. This means it will work for the 40D, the 50D, the 450D, and the 1000D. I'm still not sure about the 5DMkII, as I'm getting conflicting reports. If you have one, please give it a shot and let me know. Thanks!
