I have a Canon 400D on which the guarantee is about to run out and Mastercare want to sell me a 3 year warranty for £63.
My previous camera was a Canon 350D on which the built-in flash failed when just out of warranty. When I took it back to the dealer the reaction was 'aah! another 350D flash problem - I'm sorry but to fix it will probably cost more than the camera is worth'.
Does the 400D have any reliability issues that would make the warranty worthwhile? I have never had any camera problems apart from the one mentioned above

My 400D is about 2 years old and taken over 10K actuations as far as I am aware( i bought it 2nd hand) and touch wood its still like new no probs at all.

How much longer you planning on keeping it??? if you are upgrading in say 6 months I would say no, but if you are keeping it for say the next 2-5 years then I would say take it for peice of mind, but like said above check out what it actually covers.

I had mine 18 months and one day it just stopped working. It was a shutter problem that cost nearly £200 to fix through a Canon distributer. It really does depend on the things Sturs said though.

So far I've used my 400D for nearly 12k actuations..no prob at all, still a great camera (touch wood)..

You would do better to learn your rights under the SOGA, don't be fobbed off by retailers that use an expired warranty wrongly as an excuse not to fix faulty goods.

I've had my 400D since about early 2006 and had no problems at all with it.

As second hand 400D bodies are not too expensive now I would say it's not worth buying the warranty. In the unlikely event of an expensive fault or damage just get another second hand body. That's what I would do anyway.

Which is probably what I'd do.....however 3 years peace of mind for £63 sounds quite tempting!! I pay roughly that a year in insurance anyway....
