Canon 400D Upgrade to 60D/500D/550D

Hi all,

Im looking at upgrading my 400D to a later camera.

I have read loads of reviews of each camera now, and Im still not 100% sure which I like the sound of most. I think I am leaning towards the cheaper 500D, because a) It is cheaper! b) IQ appears to be no less than the 550D

Im just wondering if anyone could give me any advice?

My budget is around £700 max.
I generally take a lot of low-lit indoor photos, always using manual mode, some outdoor car photos and I work in a nightclub occasionally doing "Till-Late" style photos although freelance...

It would be used with a variety of lenses inc 50mm f1.8, 28-75mm F2.8 Tamron, 18-55 IS and soon to be investing in a 24mm F2.8 also...

So the question is, 500D vs 550D vs 60D

Video mode isnt of any interest to me at all, although all 3 models offer it!

Is the Image Quality of the 60D any better than that of the 500/550D and also, how is its ISO performance comparably?

Was almost in the same boat... had a 450D......Nobody had any 50D's so went for the 60D.. Admitedly i dont use the video mode but it is carcking quality!

One good avantage is the sensor and one main one for me is the ETTL mode for remotely firing speedlites!

Had some great results with the 50mm 1.8...

Im happy with mine but the mother of all evils is now looking at FF i.e 5D MKII...

cheap old 40D is as good as 50D, and that is a nice saving for a lens (way better than 400D before you asked).

xxxD bodies are really cumbersome if you need to use manual mode. xxD made it much easier to adjust on the fly.

Then I don't see a point of 24/2.8. Your tamron should cover that, unless you have a 'bad' copy. The prime doesn't have the sharpest reputation either. Better getting something with a new function.

My choice would be based on how high an ISO the camera will handle to produce output with which I was happy.

I have Rebel Xti and have tried a 40D but these are too heavy for me to handle so stuck with baby canon. This model (English name is 400D I think) Is not good at ISO 800 or above 400 is just acceptable.

The image quality is limited by the lens quality. So once you have a usable high ISO you just look to lens. Have you handled any of these? I wouldn't think it worth going from 400 to 500D.
