Long story short, there's an opportunity for me to acquire an ex-studio D200 with (maybe) 18-200 VR lens. (The boss has just got a D700, so the D300 has been relegated to 'back-up', lol)

For personal stuff, I currently use a Canon 400D, 18-55, 50 f1.8, 75-300. I don't use the long length of the 75-300 very often, and adore the nifty fifty. My only complaint about the 400D is the noise, it's not nice at 1600!

Nikon are supposed to be pretty decent in the high ISO performance, so would it be worth selling the 400D bundle and jumping ship to the dark side and buying the Nikkor nifty fifty?

I do quite a bit of close range sports, such as kiteboarding. For this, decent AF is a must due to the fast paced nature. I'm not toooo worried about the continuous shooting speed, 3.5fps on the 400D is fine with me. The guys I photograph love the pics anyway, even the ones I'd consider binning!

I'm not sure how you 400d would compare to the d200 on noise. It was really with the advent of the D3/D300/D700 that Nikon took huge leaps forwards on noise reduction. As demonstrated by the difference between my D80 (D200-esque) and D90 (D300-esque) cameras.

That said, the D200 is a professional body with dust seals and everything. Can you borrow the D200 and have a play with it? See what you think?

Also, what condition is that D200 in and how many clicks are on it?

The D200 is a professional, more robust body with weather sealing and better ergonomics. If you are going to use it in sports I think the continuous shooting speed is important. You could borrow it and give it a try.

I wouldn't change my 500D for a D200 but then I don't shoot sports. In your case it's worth considering it if the D200 is in good condition.
