Canon 400mm f/2.8 L IS - dimensions?

I need to buy a case to fit a Canon 400mm f/2.8 L IS. I don't have the lens in my possession yet so I can't check the dimensions. I'd be grateful if someone on TP who has one could quickly get the tape measure out for me.

What I need to know is:
(a) the overall length of the lens, with the hood reversed for storage, and with front and rear caps fitted;
(b) the diameter of the hood, with the big leather lens cap fitted (as it is for storage).

I don't want to rely on the dimensions on the Canon web site (349mm long x 163mm diameter) because it doesn't say whether they're measured with/without hood, with/without caps, etc.

Just whipped mine out and had a measure (lens that is),

380mm Long - Hood reversed with leatherette hood on.

200mm Wide - leatherette hood on, taken across the widest part, where the hood thumb screw is located to the leatherette hood at the other side.

Is this for a peli case for transport ?
If so can you let me know which case you decided upon ?.

Excellent Mark, saved me a job...if it is for a Peli case, then it fits in the 1510 case quite nicely, lots of pros with them, or the bigger 1560 which is what I've got...allows me to fit, 3x bodies, 400L, 70-200, 24-105, 430EX in it. Which is nice

Thanks Oli. The trouble with sources like this, though, is that you never know exactly how they've measured it. For instance "Measured Size (DxL) 6.42 x 14.11" doesn't say whether it's with or without lens caps.

Its from the outer edge of the thumb screw to the opposite side of the leatherette hood, with the hood in reversed position so the screw is locking the hood in place. So yes it does include the thumb screw.

Across the leatherette hood not taking the thumb screw into account is 193mm
