Does anyone use this set up for birds with and without the Canon x 1.4TC

what is it like as a travel carry around combo?

IQ and sharpness seems to always get good reports

User comments much appreciated as I'm thinking about getting this for an overseas trip as it will be just a little more versatile than my Nikon D7100 and Nikon 300mm f4 lens and TC14ll

Thanks Mike ........ so it will not focus at all with the TC on the 7D

yes I have just checked it - only AFs with EOS 1 series ....... that's not great ...... I would have expected it to AF up to f8

not much point then as I can get 300mm + x 1.4 at f5.6 and AF

I know the Canon has a x 1.6 sensor versus x 1.5 ........... but hardly worth its as the 300mm f4 combo is reasonably OK to hand hold in good light

Only the 1D series cameras and the new 5D MKIII can autofocus up to f8, all the rest are limited to f5.6. If you wanted to use the canon 400mm and a TC on the 7D, you could look at a 3rd part TC like one of the Kenko TCs

Or you could look at the 1.7x or 2x Nikon TCs for your current setup (D7100)

Just stick to your Nikon setup Bill as you pretty much have most if not all lens situations covered...

Joe, it is just the buggers on the internal flights in S Africa want to take my hand baggage from me ..... I can pay a little extra on the international flights but when we transfer to the small plane they take your (heavy), hand baggage from you .... I would like to take both my 300mm f4 and 300mm f2.8 VR with both TC's, and my Gitzo with me, but the weight limit keeps hitting me as I have a wife with a more than full suitcase.... going out is not bad ...... but she fills the bags coming back

buggers

Would it best to take the 300mm f/4 and 600mm f/4 then you have a light lens to take with you aswell as the bigger lens

weight - and the 600mm will not really fit in hand luggage …….. would you trust the baggage handler "monkey's" throwing your stuff around even in a Nikon case

Ive got a mint 1.4x and 1.7x for sale in the classifieds, both stunning with the 300mm f/4

Thanks Gary, I have the TC14ll and the TC20lll

I use the TC14 will the 300mm f4 and both with the 300mm f2.8 VR

I need a "lightweight" set up for S Africa ….. in the past I have used the 300mm f4 on a D300 and D7100 with the TC14Ell

I felt the Canon set up I proposed would just give me a little more carry around "reach" - because of the Canon TC situation it will not ...... better IQ and cheaper than the new Nikon 80mm 400mm VR

I get "good" shots with the 300 f4 hand held as the light is usually good and even with the TC14Ell hand held is still OK

I also take a V1 and FT-1 plus a few Nikon lens

Most of my bird shots in S Africa are taken with the Nikon 300mm f4 and the IQ and sharpness are good
