Canon 400mm IS 2.8 tripod collar

Anyone had a 400mm IS 2.8 lens collar stop turning fully round the lens? I'm at a football match and mines not turning fully......unable to get it in a position to use a monopod.

Half time now and my arms feel like there about to drop off.
 
I recall something about the bearings getting stuck. Have a google if you can.
 
Yes it's looking like bearings Tobers.

Have to get in touch with Canon CPS in the morning.
 
I hope its fixable. My 500mm f4 needed a new tripod ring as the foot snapped and CPS quoted me £400. After a bit of a fight they agreed to fix it under warranty.

Is it not a screw that comes loose under the collar?

I believe if the bearings have gone then it will be a complete new collar and as it will be a non warranty repair then I will be looking at a very expensive one.

From what I've read on the web it sounds like it's the bearings....but some have mentioned screws which are found by removing the plate on the collar.

Spoke to CPS today who obviously told me to send it in.

Anyone recommend a courier to use? Most only insure upto £2,500.00 for any loss etc.
 
I had the adaptation done on mine, it involved taking out the steel rollers and fitting toughened nylon fibre instead, i think the nylon is standard on recent lenses, i had one steel roller shatter rendering the collar totally useless, if i remember correctly it was done at Calumet in Manchester and cost about £200 about 3-4 years ago

I sent it in yesterday afternoon. Got a call this morning that it had been received and was being sent throught to a technician.....so hopefully will here from them shortly :thumbs:

Just had a text and email confirming the 400mm lens is on the way back to me.

Collar has been repaired and lubricated......cost £91.20.

So not as bad as I thought.
 
Yes I hope so too as I don't fancy having to hand hold that thing again.
