Hi i was going to buy the sigms 150-500 lens this week,i then read about this lens the canon EF 400 5.6L i know its more in price than the sigma and its a L lens but as i all ready have a 200 and a 300 lens i was thinking this lens would suit me better for wildlife on my 350 it will give me about 600mm do any of you have one and are they as good as they say thanks
 
Hi, I think you'll find that what with it being a prime the IQ will be better, I'm toying with the idea of getting one but the only thing that puts me off is the lack of "IS" I had a sigma 150-500 and got some good ish results with it unfortunately I had to sell it when time were hard!
I seen a couple of these 400's go for less than £600 on eBay 1 less than £500!!
 
I've had one and yes they're very sharp, focus speed is good too.. certainly your best option in my opinion
 
Hi, my Dad has 400 f5.6 and some of his images are brilliant. Very sharp. I would of bought one, but the minimum focus distance was a bit long for my walk about happy snapper style :D so I went with the 100-400 zoom. I tried the 400 f5.6 and 100-400 zoom side by side the other day and couldn't really see much difference in sharpness, but I think when the sun comes out the difference will become apparent.

And,,,, on a 550d with 400 f.5.6 + 1.4x II converter the auto focus doesn't work, think it only work on top notch Canon body.
 
The 400mm f5.6 is an excellent lens, pin sharp, even wide open, very fast AF, apart from the super tele's, its the best birding lens available, there's a couple in the Classifieds.
