Canon 40d broken mirror

Iam devastated :( my Canon 40d has just died on me :( the mirror is only going up on one side :( I think the mechanism has broken one side.

Iam lost without it :( will be straight to a camera shop tomorrow and hopefully they can help me out. I think iam looking at a new mirror/shutter.

Anyone experienced this problem before?
 
Mine did the same thing Xmas eve but couldn't get it in for repair until Jan, should be picking it up next week local repair guy is replacing the mirror box and reckons it should be about £160 I wouldn't have paid much more for the repair as I could pick up another one for around £250

Which could also pack up within a few weeks. At least you know with a repair you have a brand new mirror box.
 
You just have to think at which point it becomes economically viable, to get it repaired, buy another 40D second hand or save up and get a newer body. I hope you get some good news on the price for a repair and you can get it done quickly. I've hardly taken any photos this year so far but I know if I was without a camera I'd need it for that perfect shot.
 
Yes thanks, it also suffers from a sticky shutter aswell :( I did buy it second hand a few years ago now. I think a few recent football games I've shot have caused the mirror to brake :(

Will find out a cost tomorrow but for fixing both of the above I can't seeing it being cheaper than £200 :( may aswell put it towards a new body like you said. Seriously considering the 7d from Panamoz atm....cash is tight but need a camera!
 
I wouldn't take it to a camera shop, but instead sent it directly to a repairer like Canon UK or Fixation. A retailer will almost certainly charge a mark up on the repair.
 
Yeah, did think about splashing out on a 5dc or another 40d but decided to save the money to go towards either a 5d mk3 or maybe even a 1dx which I keep telling myself I will get one day lol

Ok cheers, I would want a rough price before tho I think. I've just emailed Fixation to see if they can give me a price.

Well because I was shooting HFS, thus having the mirror up and down pretty much on and off for the whole game...
 
A friend has just said that the mirror may need to be just glued back in back-as thats how its attached :thinking: seems abit strange that way. But he doesnt have any reason to lie. I did try and look closely and looks like something has snapped-but could be wrong.

I suspect the mechanism has broken, I wouldn't be putting glue in there...

Did you contact Fixation for a quote ?

I think Canon (@ Elstree) do a fixed price repair, not sure if this comes under it or how much it is - certainly worth a call / e-mail to them ...

Yeah iam not going to touch anything! Last thing I want to to is make things worse.

Yup,

Replace mirror box and shutter would be £121.00 parts and £110.00p labour.

Subject to inspection and VAT.

Yeah just phone them, sounds like hassle. Well they can't give you a quote till they see it, and then charge it you dont go with them. Plus they say it will take 3weeks! Maybe more due to the recent holidays.

Best ive come across is http://www.camerarepairdirect.co.uk/ quoted £108 for fixing both problems, 3-4 day turnaround. I could drive there tomorrow aswell as they are about an hour from me-I could do with the camera for this weekend. Seems kinda too good to be true tho! :thinking:

Been quoted parts £45 labour £45 total £108 very happy as they will fix the fault and the issue with the sticky shutter, should get it back before the weekend too.

Comes with a 6 month guarantee

Would be worth doing a follow up on here when you do receive your camera back ...

Cheers Andy, I certainly will do. Iam pretty confident with things at the moment. I was quite cautious before hand as I couldnt find much/if anything out about the company. But being able to go there and speak to the guys changed my mind :)

Will keep the thread updated.
 
Bad news :(


Just had a call from the repair center and they said its going to cost £180 as they with have to order a new mirror box. The current one can't be repaired :(

Iam at a loss with what to do now :( most part of me says right no mucking around and get the 7D from *******... :eek:

Well look at it this way £180 to repair an older camera which could (though unlikely) develop further faults or look at it as £180 discount on a new 7d :thumbs: including 1 years peace of mind thrown in. Then stick the 40d on ebay for spares / repair. I sold a knackered old 400d like that and got £65 for it. :eek: should get more for a 40d and then add that to your £180.
That 7d looking tempting yet ? :clap:
