Canon 40D Continuous Burst Stall?

Looking through the tech spec of the Canon 40D it says that I can take 75 images in a burst with the image set to large jpeg, however having tried this it seems to stall at about 8 or 9 images.

I was considering whether I need a faster memory card but when I read the spec it seems that the camera will buffer images before even needing to write them to the card but really not sure as to how it all works and what the buffer limit is?

For reference I have a Kingston 4GB x133 card.

Could someone please explain the process and how I can achieve this 75 image potential? If the answer is a faster card then how fast? Do I need a whopping x600 or just a x266 / x300?

Make sure you have turned off in camera noise reduction, and if it has it highlight tone priority. I think they are both enabled by default.

See how you get on then.

Have you checked you have enabled large jpeg only and not large jpeg + RAW?

Switched off the NR and got 50 continuous shots before I got bored. Switched it back on and it stalled again at about the 8 shot mark.

Seriously, I woulfd invest in some UMDA compliant cards, the card you are using only has a 20MB/sec write speed, personally, I only use Sandisk Extreme IVs and have no issues with either my 30 or 50D.

Thanks Pete but I think we've concluded the issue was with the camera having to process the NR rather than the speed of the memory cards.

On a side note Marcus, why not try shooting some shots in Raw as well, there's so much more you can do with the images in post processing with a Raw that you can't do with a jpeg.

Hi marcus,

Using a prog like Photoshop elements, Lightroom or CS4 you can adjust colour and saturation, white balance, contrast and sharpness, noise reduction and exposure correction without losing any image quality.

But if you get all those things right in the first place, by setting the picture styles presets as you want them, and getting the exposure and white balance correct as of course you should, then there's no benefit to shooting Raw.
