Canon 40D Focussing Screens

Hi,

I've noticed there's a Focussing Screen that's got grid-lines on (EF-D I think!) it.

Just wondering if anyone's tried any different focussing screens on the 40D yet? How difficult it is to change them? And finally is anyone has actually any experience of this screen?

Changing them is VERY easy. They pop out at the flick of a tab.

I debated getting a different one then thought. Nahh the extra lines would drive me mad
and the darker manual screen... well its darker.

But isn't the darker manual screen the EF-S one or whatever it is?

The EF-D is simply the same as the one in cam but with lines init? :shrug:

Just as an update to this thread, in case anyone else is interested.

I bought the EF-D screen from Warehouse Express and fitted it tonight. I found the instructions very clear, the tool they provide to remove the old screen and insert the new one - is VERY easy to use and now I have a nice EF-D screen with lines all over the place which I think looks good.

I've not used it in anger yet but I think it will be useful!

Whats the darker one all about... doesn't this make things difficult to see?
 
Ripped straight from the Warehouse Express website:

"EF-A - The standard focus screen for EOS 40D. Standard Precision Matte surface, ideal with most lenses including zooms f/3.5 thru 5.6. All matte surface. Includes a special tool to remove existing screen.

EF-D - Precision Matte surface, with etched grid lines to assist composition. The EOS 40D's AF points remain fully visible. Focus characteristics suited to most lenses.

EF-S - Exclusively for the EOS 40D, this focus screen is optimized for wide-aperture lenses from f/1.8 to f/2.8. Areas that are slightly out of focus appear more out of focus, making it easier to tell when focus is right-on. Ideal for users who frequently manually-focus in dim light with fast lenses."

I've also read somewhere else that the EF-S screen is darker - which is what I think Janice is on about, I've also read somewhere else that the EF-D screen is the same as the EF-A screen but with grid-lines.

I switched to the EF-D a couple of months ago, and I wouldn't go back to the EF-A. It makes it much easier to get horizontals and verticals aligned. No change to the brightness of the view through the viewfinder but it does seem to have more clarity. A win all around.

I would be tempted to try the EF-S for fast primes but I still have a few slower zooms I use fairly often. Whilst it's very easy to switch the screens it's certainly not a field modification and needs a steady hand and a clean environment.

Thanks for that - I think it is the EF-S that I have - for th e40D ... not the EF-D (typo).
Fortunately, it is on my second body, so will leave my 50mm 1.4 on that one.
 
Do they not make a split image/microprism screen. Better than all the others.

They do, but I wouldn't change Ef-D to anything else. I am now getting one for 1Ds
