Canon 40D lens compatibility ?help :D

Hi guys quick question :D ( and probably a dumb one :( )
I have a Canon 600D and my uncle said would I like to buy a Canon Eos 40D from him, its only been used a few times.
Am I right to assume all my canon 600D EF/EFS lenses and speed lights will fit this model ? A fellow photographer said the 600D has a Built-in focus motor and the 40D does not have one so you have to get different lenses ? ?

Any info from you guys would be great

Your friend is getting confused with the Nikon D40 which does not have a built in focus motor.

Any lens that works with the 600D will work with the 40D.

all the canon DSLRs have focus motors so any EFS lens will work on any camera with an EFS mount (and any EF lens on any camera with an EFS or EF mount)

In short this means that any EF or EFS lens will work on any xxxD or xxD model - but if you buy a 1D series, 1DS series, 1Dx, 5D series or 6D you will only be able to use an EF lens (that is to do with lens mount and field of view , not focus motors)

Thanks for the info :) The 40D feels a lot more solid then the 600D I was going to use the 40D as a second body, but i think that might be the other way around now :shrug:

oh yes the xxDs all feel better in the hand - they've also got the double scroll wheel system which is much more intuitive than the arrow buttons on the xxxD series

(I've got a 40D , a 20D, and a 450D but the latter doesn't get much use)

the only thing that you might be disappointed with if you are used to the 600D is that the MP count is lower (10.1MP on the 40D) - its not really an issue unless you want to crop substantially.

(If you do you might want to look for a 60D or a 7D )
 
As has been said, yes all your lenses will fit and the 40D is a great body.
If you're getting it at a good price, I wouldn't hesitate in buying it ...
 
£140... no memory card but comes with a bag and standard kit lens. So I will report back when I get a memory card and a few test shots done :D

that's a decent price - CF cards are cheap and you don't need a massive one 4gB will be ample

That's a good price for the 40D and 17-85 lens. As above CF cards aren't that expensive.

If you do go for it, enjoy :)

standard kit lens on a 40D will probably be 18-55 (non IS) - if it were the 17-85 that would be an outstanding price - but even with the lesser lens its not bad by any means

The standard kit lens on the 40D was the 17-85, so as you say makes its an outstanding price.

Although I've seen them for sale with an 18-55 - presume this was a body only purchase and they've added a standard kit lens (18-55)

Mine came as a kit (albeit second hand but with the original box etc) and that was a 18-55 - I think they probably did both options (I sold the 18-55 and got a tamron 17-50 f2.8 instead)

Would make sense - mine came with the 17-85 in the box from new.

Either way its a good price for something that's low use ...

I think there were actually 3 kits, i can remember there being an 18-55, 17-85 & strangely a 28-135 kit.

No Canon DSLRs have focus motors, but all EF and EF-S lenses do. So same difference.
