Canon 40D or 50D as first DSLR

the 40d was my first enthusiast grade camera and the controls, viewfinder and build quality were much better than the lower range cameras i had before it.

interestingly they are better made than modern cameras, they really built them like tanks back then and seem to have been trying to cut costs ever since then.

they really suffer when you bump up the ISO setting though, ALOT of noise is introduced quickly.

Agreed.

I owned and used (successively) the 10D, 20D and 40D. Each proved to be that little bit better than its predecessor but all were extremely well built...

What about them?
My Dad lives in the North East and I live in Essex, so he will sort me a lens or two out but they will need to be posted.
I ended up buying a couple of lenses got a kit 18-55mm and a Sigma 55-200 which should be decent enough start. The camera and lenses arrived today so I am just trying to work through the various settings and taking random photos to try see how the settings work(at the same time as reading DSLR and working through for dummies book and owner manual PDF). My next investment will be a decent camera bag and a bigger and faster CF card.

I took the kids out today and it was the perfect excuse to try out my new camera.
These are a few of the photos I took.
I made a pact with myself when I bought the camera that I wouldn't use any fully automatic modes on the camera so I could actually push myself to learn(and make mistakes). Although I did use auto ISO on some shots.
My main aims of today where to capture movement, think about shapes and blur the background.
Anyway here is a sample of some of the effects I was trying to achieve today.
My plan is next weekend to go out at dawn and do some photography at first light in the forest.

I still own a 40D, and I still consider to be a very capable camera. While the 50D is newer and has more pixels, if given the choice of 40D with 50k shots, or a 50D with 70K shots, I would get the camera with less 'mileage'. As for what 10MPixels can do, ..I have two different 60" wide canvas prints on our home's walls, taken with a camera that has about that many total pixels (Canon S110 12MPixel)

Hi sorry for the late reply. The camera I bought in the end was a 50D with 22k(ish) shutter count. I paid just over £100 for the 50D camera, 2 lenses, 4Gb CF card, charger, 2 batteries, battery grip and official camera strap. I was pretty pleased with the price and now I have had chance to use the camera a few times I am very impressed with it. Although not very impressed with my photo skills, but I'm never happy with my own creativity that includes my other passion which is drawing.

You did well in finding a camera with only 22k clicks on the shutter, and the price is a good one!

Agree about the 40D it’s a great camera, I still have mine though don’t use it anymore but it still works perfectly its well built

one thing I would advise is to shoot in raw , with modern software is really good now at dealing with any noise
