My main camera is a 7D, and I've just sent my backup Canon 40D to Fixation to be repaired and its going to cost £250 new mirror box and shutter box.

Iam not too sure what do do now, since you can get them off eBay for less than that obv second hand...

I'm approaching that problem with my 40D (222,000 + clicks), but it hasn't failed yet.
If the repair costs aproaches the cost of a new 60D, i wil probably go that route, or buy a lightly used 50D from a relative. If an EBay 40D hasn't had too much use that may still be an alternative.

If You can get 2nd hand canon 40d for less than the repair costs, I don't think it is wise to repair it.I have seen Canon 40d being sold less than £200 in the forums with shutter counts less than 10000.

Tough call.

£250 for a 40D in known condition, with a shutter good for another 100,000+ clicks, and presumably with some kind of warranty following the repair.

Or £180-£220 say, for a 40D from eBay, in unknown condition, with no warranty, and possibly about to suffer a shutter failure. Models in good condition with some history will be at the upper end of the price range, and they *probably* won't have shutter issues imminently.

Personally I don't like the throw-away culture and in this case paying a *little* extra to get mine repaired would be preferable. Plus the warranty is worth something. But I don't think I'd pay a *lot* extra.

Tough call.

I've decided iam going to go ahead with the repair. I could get a cheap 40d off eBay but then that could suddenly develop a fault :/

Yep, my advice would be as Stuart, its a tough call, but I think I'd get it repaired over buying an 'unknown' one that could fail at any time ...
