Canon 40D Shutter button Lag Time problem

hi all...

My trusty Canon 40D is delevoping a falut :'(

the lag time between pressing the shuter button from half way all the way to to take the photo is increasing to the point its a second between fully pressing the shutter button and the photo been taken - which is no use for action shots i take!

the auto focus seams to lock on and its not hunting or anything in this lag time. the more i use it the longer the lag time seams to get.

just wondering if anybody has had this and what the fix is? i know the 40D has the error 99 shutter issue, the shutter sounds fine and has never mised a trick makes me think and hope the problem is in the shutter button?!

anythought would be greatly apperciated :)

Hi Rob, I have a 30d with the exact same problem, but also chucks up err99 which means the shutter. If there are no error codes then there is a rocker switch underneath the shutter button which would need replacing. To give you an idea, I have been quoted £139.20 for a full service which would include the replacement shutter. Might be worth contacting Colchester cameras, staff seem very helpfull.
 
I will tell you now what has worked for me on two 40Ds.

Isopropanal...

Make the shutter button the lowest part of the camera (I mounted mine on a tripod)

Remove both batteries and battery flap

Tip about a spoonful of IPA in to the battery compartment

Keep pressing and twisting the shutter button around

Wait a good long while for it to dry

Repeat a few times if it isn't working perfectly

What you are describing sounds like the "Sticking Shutter button" that a quick Google shows that the Canon 10D-50D range can suffer from.

It normally is either due to lack of use / a mechanical problem where the button gets dirt etc into the shutter button contacts.

Ultimately it may require repair the switch to be replaced, which can be costly as its labour intensive, ( See this video here ) but some people have found that spray contact cleaner and a blow out with compressed air can be a solution - I did this successfully on an old 20D.

I have seen another method where a spoonful of 'pure' alcohol is placed in the battery compartment to drain out through the shutter button -(Link) but if it was my camera would be extremely wary and probably use a syringe to get the alcohol (isopropyl 99%) in the right area.

But using a spray contact cleaner and compressed air might be enough - worth a try?

many thanks for taking the time to reply :-) i googled but didnt find this info!

so far some blue tack on the shutter button to twizzle it around has helped fix the problem which is good as im off the leman classic soon:-) will get hold of some alchaol cleaner to purge as well!
