Right I'm after my walk about lens now. Was gonna go for a piece of L glass but money needed elswhere. I have 200-225 to spend. I want a good short length up to say maybe 200? Maybe not as long. Would like is too. What are peoples thoughts?
 
So you want a zoom range from wide to medium telephoto, you want IS, and your budget is £225. Something like the Sigma 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6 DC OS HSM ? (£229 from Amazon.)
 
Yeah I guess that could do it. Does anybody have any experience with this lens? I've also been looking at 55-250mm is Canon.
 
The best you can do is wait a month get another 100-150£ on top and get the 70-200 F4L if not get some of the Sigma range 28-300, 18-200, 18-250 etc
 
I have a Sigma 18 - 200, and as a walk about lens its adequate, it does have its limitations in low light being a super zoom, but as a general walkabout its ok
 
Well as say I want it as a walk about. I don't use my camera much because of my lens I have. 24-70 f2.8 and 75-300. I know this is good coverage but I want something to do middle range.
 
Canon EF-S 18-135 to consider maybe? Telezoom for walk-about is not ideal choice unless you like to be secretive but again it depends what style do you use.
 
Is the current 24-70 f2.8 the Canon L version?
If so it is't that wide on your crop body so you are losing out slightly.

If me I would sell the 24-70 (if it is the above model) and the 75-300, combine your current funds and replace with a

Canon 15-85mm (ideal walkabout lens) and a
Canon 70 200 f4 non IS/IS (or similar/better)
 
I've just sold a 70-200 f4 L to put towards a 70-200 2.8 IS L but the f4 is a fantastic lens. I used it to take my best photos as it was pin sharp throughout the whole range. I sold mine for £361 so if you save up a bit more it's not too unreachable and well worth it.
 
The Canon 18-200mm IS is adequate as a walkabout on a 40D, but it is rather more expensive than your budget. I use it all the time as a walkabout and although it isn't as good optically as some of my other lenses it does allow me to cover a big range without changing lenses. I would say that if you intend to upgrade your body to a higher megapixel sensor then this lens is not so good. I have tried it on a friends 50D and the results were disappointing, but with 10mp it's okay.
 
No, my 24-70 f2.8 is sigma. It's a good lens but I always end up shooting at the max and could do with a bit more.

Ah I see. How far do you think you go beyond the 70mm?

How wide do you want to be at the other end?
Speaking of Canon lenses only I can only think of the -
18-135mm f3.5-5. 6
18-200mm f3.5-5. 6
As said above though these superzooms have their limitations.
If you find yourself never needing less than the 24mm what about the 24-105mm?
Slightly shorter at the long end but a decent lens even if it is designed more for full frame with good IQ.
Only downside is it would eat up your funds plus more e.g. selling your other lenses/more cash.
 
24-105 yes was the one I wanted but problem is the funding for it.
 
I know if I sold both lens and my current funds I could just get it. But I really can not do that. So I will have to go for a cheaper range. Bottom end of the lens is not so important but I guess needs to be around 24. But not many lens out there like that. So guess I will be looking 18-135 or sigma 18-125.
 
I take it you want the convenience of not having to do lens changes all the time
 
Yeah. I know changing of lens is a big plus point of having a dslr, but with having kids and wanting to catch moments I feel this is my best option.
