Excellent choice!! You'll avoid the desire to upgrade in a few months' time.

+1 for the 40D - superb camera & it will give you something to grow into as your skills increase

I went into Jessops today and looked at the 50D and a 450D which I think are about the same size ans weight as the 40D and the 500D. I much prefered the feel of the 50D as I could hold it properly, also it has a much bigger viewfinder and has more fps for sports or nature shots so thats pretty much made my mind up

Good choice, you won't be disappointed. Just moved from a 350D to a 40D. Well impressed!
