Hi can anyone who owns tell how good or how bad they are ? would you buy one again? what you like what you hate? please would you buy something else ?:help:

Great camera.

It gives you speed, nice handling, sturdy body and great images. Incredible value for the sub £400 you can get them for used now. (I got mine for £370)

Personally, I wouldn't buy any else because it does exactly what I want for an astonishingly good price, but you might be different.

The only model I'd really say challenges it on value for money is the newer nikon D90. But I didn't really consider the D90 because I have my eye on a few canon lenses I'd like to buy in the future that nikon just has no equivalent to.

Go to a shop and try out a 50D to get some idea of the handling of it (The 50D body is near enough identical) before buying one though. You might just prefer the ergonomics on a nikon body (or another brand) though.

You wouldn't be disappointed with a 40D ;)

I have ownwed one for two years, I love it. Everything feels just right about it. The size and weight are spot on for me and all the dials and buttons are in the right place. I also like the fact that it is only 10mp. It keeps my file sizes down and makes my limited processing quicker. The 10 mp sensor also allows mediocre lenses to shine. I get superb results from the Canon 18-200mm IS which really struggles on a 15 mp camera.

I don't take video, so the only thing I would have liked it to have was an adjustable LCD display for taking pictures low to the ground.

Other than that I can't fault it.

I love mine. However, if I was buying again I would save up 3 times the cost and get a 7D! For the price the 40D is truely superb though.

I have one and like it as my first DSLR . I have previous slr experiance and had a bridge camera for many years before taking the plunge . It's quite easy to use but just takes a fair amount of time to remember what menu to use for what . I can't really find anything that I don't like about it . Mine is in for repair at the minute as the thumb wheel stopped working . I'm not sure if that is a common fault or just my bad look . My next upgrade is going to be a 7D but would be happy to have another 40D . Anymore questions just ask . John

I've just upgraded from a 20d, and am incredibly happy with the 40d. Seems better in all departments, and I've been very happy with the image quality.

Bought one off here for a friend - had a play with it for a day - seems a very nice camera. Feels very solid and well made. ISO 'only' goes to 3200 but it doesn't look too bad.

It does every thing I want very well indeed
so won't change anytime soon.

I got mine about5 months ago and luv it. Nice sturdy body, decent noise handling, good AF and at less than £400 its a bargin would only upgrade for a fullframe camera..... which prob wont be for a good while.

A 50D can be had for under £500 if your lucky, the improved LCD and micro focus adjustment might be worth considering but apparently the IQ isnt as good as the 50D, dont know how true that is.

Superb camera at a realistic price. Loved mine to bits. Replaced it with a 50D but I still have access to the 40 as it is now used by my wife. Thoroughly recommended.

Agree with the above mines been excellent really nice image quality and fantastic to use
bombproof too mine has done nearly 70K actautions and not missed a beat

Apart from being a bit heavy I think it's an iconic great camera!

I recently upgraded from 40D to 7D. Not because of any issues with the 40D (there weren't any) but just because I wanted a 7D. Still have the 40D and would be quite happy to use it again.

Great camera to start out with. Still miss mine.

I changed from 40d tdo 50d. Sold the 50d when I bought the GF1.. but quickly bought a 40d again as a back up. Superb and lovely in every way!! :D

Can't fault mine.. and looking at the current range I don't see anything short of the 7D as a great improvement on it.

Cracking camera for the money. I'm selling mine in the forum for only one reason. going full frame. :)

I cant recommend it enough... you will not be disappointed. It is of a professional quality :)

What sort of a mess are you in? Problems with 7D?

I had a 40D that was amazing and working perfectly, got tempted by the 7D so went for it, then found I wasn't very impressed with the low ISO noise, others have reported similar - but there are also people who say they are happy with theirs, so who knows.

So I used it less and less, before finally buying a GF1 - better portability and IQ not far off the 7D in certain situations.

Found that the 7D was not being used at all so sold it and all my canon lenses and speedlite to adopt the M4/3 system fully, and now I am wishing I still had a proper DSLR to accomodate the shortfalls of the M4/3 system.

So am now at the point of selling my current stuff to purchase another DSLR :cuckoo:

Bet you wished you'd never asked :lol:

the 40D has been my first for a year and half and never once let me down until now, and i don't blame the camera, just bad luck. it well built and seen me through thousands of photos, battery life is good and i only use 2 different lenses. BUT because its in the shop getting looked at, i bought a 7D last week, used it for the first time tonight. i'll still use the 40D, but i guess many might agree 'right tools for the job' .. i find the buttons and dials just where they feel right. i could have stretched to the 50D but it was money.

I bought a s/h one but actually preferred the 1dmk2 I had previously. Perhaps that isn't a foar comparison though. I've also had a 30d and a 50d, I think the 40d is better than both of them pound for pound.

40D is perhaps the best Canon under £400. It shines with f/4L, 100mm macro lenses and also takes consumer lenses quite well. It is a nice beginner to intermediate level dSLR. If we add another £100 - 150 I'd go instead for 5D mk1 (direct backup of 1Ds) or 50D (high fps, great with 100mm macro and AF microadjustment). 1D mk2 is worth serious consideration too.

But isn't the 40D getting long in the tooth now? How reliable are they when they start to get on a bit? I ask as i was looking at them some time ago and liked the features etc but was worried about the age of the model or am i talking rocking horse poo?

The latter. Any device without warranty is similarly likely to fail. I've heard about cameras failing at 2000 clicks, some go way beyond 100000. Perhaps it depends if it was assembled on Monday or Friday, perhaps on the handling, or just pure statistics.

If you are that concerned, get 1D mk2-3 and then you will at least have the best chance of having a durable body.

What 40D doesn't do is AF microadjustment. That can be important depending on the lenses used.

If you can wait a while, some people are putting together a 40D CHDK package which will do AF micro adjustment, video (YES, it is possible because the 40D has live view), contrast detect AF in live view and scripts.

Could you post a link please? How reliable are these patches?

Not released yet, but CHDK is generally quite good. I wouldn't use it if my camera was in warranty, but I bought used so it doesn't matter.

I used to have CHDK on my canon compact, and it did a good job.

These patches/firmware have been rumoured for ages! Dont htink they will ever come, was there not somthing about the camera having to be connected to the PC to shot video, the micro adjustment would be a welcome addon.
