just bought a canon 40d from ebay at a bargin price as its immaculate, for body only

any ideas on the best first lens to get for it? canon? sigma? etc

and also memory cards and batterys

help *** be greatful cheers

what sort of photography are you into is a good place to start ;)

I guess the obvious first question is what kind of lens are you wanting (type of photography) and what sort of budget do you have in mind ?

I like the idea of a simple prime. It'll make you think about framing the shot properly.

Wide angle: Canon 18-55 IS
Prime: Canon 50mm 1.8mm
Walkabout: Canon 28-105mm
Telephoto: Sigma 70-300mm DG APO
Macro: Cosina 100mm or Tokina 100mm or Tamron 90mm or Canon 100mm

If you want to spend more than £200 for each lens then the list gets too huge!

Good list to avoid!

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 is a good affordable starting place as general lens.

I got extra memory and batteries from Kerso, good price and great service too. The battery is unbranded but you'd never tell when using it.
I also got a 24-70L which is amazing but expensive and a 50 1.8 which is great and really cheap. Primes really make you think about a shot and a nifty fifty is a worthy addition you your camera bag.

The kit lens that comes with a 40d, the 17-85 IS, is also pretty good and you may find a few around as people upgrade.

I guess it depends on what you want to shoot, how much you want to spend and what uses you have in mind for your pictures, if you can get hold of someone elses kit bag and get a feel of the kind of lens you want for what you want to shoot then it may be really beneficial.
Or take your camera to a local shop and get their advice and try out their kit, if you're unsure what you want then it really is worth trying out your options before you spend your money.

The first lens I bought with my 40D was the Canon 18-200mm IS. The plan was to use this lens for a while until I decided what type of photography I enjoyed, then I would buy specific lenses to suit and sell the 18-200mm. I have ended up with numerous lenses for specific purposes, but the lens I still use most and is always on my camera as a walkabout is the 18-200mm. The lens was originally sold as a kit lens with the 50D and although some reviews don't rate it very highly matched with the 50D it performs really well with the 10mp sensor on the 40D. In my opinion it is well worth considering as a starter lens.

Ok then:
Canon 14mm
Canon 85mm 1.2
Canon 400mm 2.8

That's even worse . 85mm is sort of useful - but then that would miss 95% of other shots. 14mm has no filter thread and is fairly soft as far as I heard.

I could not find the symbol for 'sarcastic' when I was writing my reply above ;)

Anyway, without the OP stating what he wants to use the lens for, and what the budget is, no-one can give any useful advice.

Ok try this, nothing silly, all good bang for buck lenses;

Wide angle AND walkabout - Canon EFS 18-135 IS (bit of barrel distortion at 18mm but ignore the early reviews, its a cracker!)

Prime - Canon EF 50mm II

Telephoto - Canon EFS 55-250

...yes I do have all these lenses!

As for cards, an 8 gig Sandisk Ultra or Extreme would do nicely, fast and reliable, and as for batteries, Jessops own are actually very good, better than Canon's I find!

I have 2 genuine Canon batteries for the 40D and 2 compatible ones (one is an Hahnel, the other is unbranded) and a 4gb CF card all for sale, as well as a 50mm f1.8.

I'm not sure what the second hand value is on any of them, but if the OP is interested and anyone wants to suggest a fair price for anything then I'm all ears and happy to start a separate thread in the for sale forum.
