Canon 40d's with the same frame count

I'm sure some one else must have had this issue.

I have two Canon 40d's and they are currently running with frame counters very close to each other. This means that if I try to transfer images from both camera's in to the same same folder on the computer, I get the dialogue box telling me the second one is a duplicate and asking if I would like to over write the first image.

What did you do?

What do you use to import the images? Most tools allow you to rename the files during the import.

Bung it in a new folder! :shrug:

My Camera always read DCIM, I just create a new folder and drag the DCIM into it.

You can manually reset one of the bodies to zero to get the two of them out of sync...see page 72 of your user guide.

(FWIW, 1srs bodies allow you to change the IMG prefix for a different, user selectable prefix of upto 4 characters).

Download Faststone image viewer, use it to batch rename the first set of pictures. Then do the same with the second set of pictures, download and batch rename.

I lost 3000 pictures through my stupidity and not changing filenames. It's a lesson you only learn once

use any editing program to drag the files off the cards and change the name to anything you like

select all - change the name and then drag them off

I assume from the OP's statement that they're being utilised somewhat equally and therefore would remain 'out of sync' file numberwise.

If you really want them to be seperate then rename the files so that the camera serial No. is part of the filename.

I agree, if 2 cameras clash on file names then I batch rename prefixing with 1_ or 2_

Rename on import is the easiest solution if you don't want to change the file name in camera.

Thanks everyone. It's looking like I need to start renaming the files as I import them. I normaly do a straight copy on to the drive and rename them later, but that'll have to stop now.
