Canon 430 ex ii vs other models

Can anyone explain to me in basic terms ('pretend' I'm an idiot) what I get from a Canon 430ex ii that I don't get with some of the cheaper Metz/Nissin etc Canon-dedicated ttl flashes? I've stared at reviews and stats until my brain started to leak out through my nose but most of it is still lost on me.

Ok, I'm looking at the Nissin di466. What would the Canon give me that the Nissin wouldn't? The guide number is lower. That's the power right? What does it mean in real terms? Is there any other advantage?

There are some good 3rd party flashes like Metz 58AF or 76 series, but they are fairly expensive.
That nissin is not very powerful, and would certainly have lower resale value. There may be compatibility issues later on.
As an alternative you may want to look for used 580EX mk1 430EX mk1. They are just as good, I have both.

I choose the Nissin Di622 over the Canon. Glad I did, over half the price, (cost me £60). The pros outweigh the cons in my eyes. The Nissin is over half the price then the Canon ex ii. But recycles slower, it takes 4 seconds to be fully charged for the next flash where as the Canon is ready in less than half a second. Nissin has a guide number of 144 @ ISO 200 and the Canon has a guide number of 141 @ ISO 200, so very close to each other. Both TTL so fully auto, plus the Nissin has build in slave. If you never had a flashgun before the Nissin at a bargain price is worth it.

Thanks guys. Spotted a used 580ex mk1 second hand for about the price of a new 430ex mk2, Would that be a good buy? I don't know what the shelf life of the average flash is or if buying used is risky. I'm afraid a used one might pack in shortly after purchase.

I had the same doubts when I bought mine well used, but its been fine for a year with average use indoors and outdoors. 580EX is definitely more useful in the field, with 430EX and 550EX now only used as slaves.
