Canon 430ex-ii or 550ex?

the only real difference is that it can act as a master trigger in canon's wireless flash system. i'm guessing if you don't need the extra power of the 550 or the wireless master functionality then go for the 430.

i have the 430 and it's a very capable flash, works great in day light - high speed sync mode gives me great results almost every time - no complaints from me at all.
 
A couple of other useful advantages that the 550EX has.....

Focus assist will cover the outer AF points on a 1D/1Ds srs body
FEB (Flash exposure bracketing) is available.
