Canon 450d or 500d

I'm about to take my first step into the world of dslr's and i'm down to a choice of two, the Canon 450d twin lens kit and the 500d single lens kit.

I'm mostly interested in landscapes and portraits, but that may change the more I get into photography.

I've done the maths on the two options....

450D with with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and the 55-250mm f/4-5.6 is £480.

500D with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 £450 (this includes £30 cash back).

I can't afford any more than £480 and I have played with a number of different camera's in Jessops to see how they feel in my hand.

So the question is... Is the 450D with the two lenses a better choice than the 500D with the one lens?

If you do not care about video then go with the 450D. If you want video capabilities then the 500D is the only option at that price range.

Both are great cameras.
 
500 video or not

but that 55-250 is surely nice :)

thinking about it the 450 is more of a bargain with 2 lenses but picture in a couple months time u wanna add your arsenal with a 50 1.8 (and u will eventually as its really cheap) and u wanna shoot in low lights then u will find the 500 has the better edge in that department

Have you considered looking at a 450D from this site and chosing your lenses?

I can't offer any opinions on the 500D but i bought a 450D with the two lenses you mentioned a little over a year ago and have really enjoyed the options the lenses have given me as beginner.

I started off by seeking opinions on here and the 55-250 was recommended by folk as it is good value for money and can easily be sold on if you decided it wasn't for you or that you wanted to upgrade.

Video is not part of the equation.

It has to be a new camera as it's being bought for me as a gift and they won;t buy second hand.

I have seen new 55-250's for around £150 but if I got the 500D it'd be a while before I could afford one.

So is it better to have a 2nd lens or, from what I have read in reviews, a slightly better camera?
 
Benefits of the 500D over the 450D:

* Higher resolution screen
* HD video @ 20fps
* ISO 3200, 6400 and 12800 (450D goes up to 1600)
* Four levels of noise reduction
* More megapixels

I think the 450D is slightly cleaner at ISO 1600, but it's not a massive difference.
 
As I said not worth it if you do not need video. ISOs higher than 1600 are too noisy, the extra megapixels do not really make a difference. Only nice thing is the better screen but an extra lens is much more useful.

The 50 1.8 is already on my wants list :)

I have had both and would recommend the 500D The screen on the back is much better especially for 'live view' mode and it's just generally a nicer camera to use. They are both great to be honest!
 
Thank you everyone for your comments. I've decided to go with the 450D with twin lens pack as it will be some time before I can invest in a second lens.
