canon 450d shutter speed question

Im new to photography and bought a canon 450d a couple of months ago.

After getting to grips with the basics i wanted to start trying some long exposure photography. However, The longest shutter speed I seem to be able to select is 30 seconds which is not very long after looking at some examples which have exposure of over a hundred seconds.

Any help welcome.

you'll need to use the BULB setting, and a remote shutter release button.

Set it to bulb - it will stay open as long as you hold the shutter button. You'd best look for a cable or wireless release to reduce shake (these can also be locked open so you don't need to stand holding it)

If you swith to M mode you can set it to Bulb. The shutter will stay open for as long as the button is pressed. Use a tripod and cable/wireless release.

Cheers

Ron

Am I right in thinking that if you use mirror lockup in combination with bulb the shutter will stay open until pressed a second time, or have I made that up?

1st press mirror lifts. second press shutter fires.
