Hoping to upgrade my canon 350d soon....

Anyone care to enlighten on the differences between the
450d v 1100d?

In some ways the 1100d is inferior

~ Slower fps (3 compared to 3.5)
~ Smaller Screen, 2.7" compared to 3"
~ Shorter flash range (9m compared to 13m)


But some features definitely seem a draw...
~ Exposure +/- 5 instead of 2
~ Video capture ( but I've heard this is poor?)
~HDMI/ WIFI
~30g Lighter

Is it worth the extra money?
 
Canon 450d can shoot video , low noise at high ISO, better battery life and cheaper.
So, if these are are important, then go with that.

The 450d doesn't have video:thinking::bonk:

The only downside is its such a small jump from the350 to the 450 would you notice the change,might be better going for a 50 or 60d
 
To be fair I have 60D's and the mrs has an 1100D... its a great camera, I reach for it loads when I just go out randomly not on a job.. because its nice and light while still capable of stunning detail with a good lens attached
 
50d / 60d are out of my price range, but I might just be able to squeeze an 1100d
 
So the jump from 350 to 450 isn't much, but 350 to 1100 is?

The 1100 is definetly drawing me, what is the noise like at high ISO on the 1100d?

The flaws that I see in the 1100 don't weigh out the pros for me I don't think

~ Slower fps (3 compared to 3.5) - - A flaw yes, but I rarely if ever use burst / continuous shooting mode, so certainly won't "miss" the difference, as I've never used it to miss it if that makes sense
~ Smaller Screen, 2.7" compared to 3" - - Again smaller screen than the 450, but its still bigger than my 350 so its going to be an ugrade anyway
~ Shorter flash range (9m compared to 13m) - - This is shame, but I have a flashgun now so will be using that.

Cost is a deciding factor

The 450d is £150ish used, but for £180ish used I can get the 1100d, but that would be my max max I could spend

Whereas the 50d 60d seem to be £200-£250 +

If you don't need to shoot video I would put my money on a Canon 40D
 
No I don't need to shoot video, the 40d was over budget aswell... Unless I go for the scratched one mpb has.

£180 is absolute max really...

I recently bought a SH 1100D for my daughter - great camera for the price. I have a 400D and it's as good or likely better than that with the addition of video, albeit not as good as more expensive cameras. You're going to get what you pay for.

More importantly perhaps is what glass is on the front of it. Have you thought of buying a lens instead maybe for the 350D?
 
So the 40d is faster continuos shooting and max shutter speed than the 1100d, has a larger flash range & bigger screen

But.... it's only 10.1mp compared to 12.2
Has less of an exposure range +/-2 instead of the +/-5 the 1100d has
Max of 3200 iso compared to 6400 on the 1100d
And less autofocus modes..

And another thing, its heavy! 822g compared to the 495g of the 1100d, that's getting on to twice the weight!

Would 10mp be alright for printing up to a4 size?
 
I also hope to be adding a 55-220, 27-80 & nifty 50 eventually, so glass isn't the problem ;)

I thought the 8mp wouldn't be a problem with the 350d but I am already hitting problems with resizing digital images and loosing quality / sharpness,
 
i own a 1100d and i love it if i was to upgrade it would need to be a big jump in mp and fps for me to let it go it can do video ok it is not the best in the world, there is still dslrs that cant do video it is small easy to use and cary around with you and can pull off some decent photos here is a photo taken with a 50 1.8 1/60 f4 iso 800

What's important to you?

Most of the specs you're quoting are meaningless - the power of the built in flash? lower exp comp range?

If you're in a situation you need to be caring how powerful the built in flash is, all hope of a great photo has already left, I'm not sure I can think of a reason I'd want to know how far exactly the exp is more than 2 stops from the meter. I've either pre metered and I know what I'm exposing for, or I'm looking to get the meter 'right' with a little comp.

You can print A3 from less than 6 mp, what's really important to you though?

For me - none of those cameras could replace my 40d, not even close. The handling between an 1100d and a 40d is night and day. But for you the smaller size and weight of the others could be a bonus - for me it's a distinct disadvantage.
 
I think I am leaning more towards the 1100d... with the replacement of my kit lens to a telephoto and a nifty 50

You're replacing your standard zoom with a tele zoom? Are you getting a new kit lens with the 1100d?

Well I was thinking of getting a 55-200 (maybe not classed as a tele zoom in hindsight lol) and a nifty fifty 50mm.

I don't think I've ever used anything below 35mm, so when I get rid of my 18-55
I'll pick up a canon 27-80mm just in case
 
I had a 450D as my first DSLR and while it was a very capable camera the 40D I replaced it with blew it out the water. Yes its "only" 10 meg but it is a very good sensor. The **D range of cameras do have a lot over the ****/***D range. The best thing I liked was the round click wheel the use and also you get the LCD top panel. Also you get a large viewfinder with a bright prism.
 
if i was you i would hold off and just use your camera till it dies get the full use from it until the time comes that the camera is holding you back by all means upgrade your lens collection but buy wise and only ef not efs that way if you are going to jump the option is open to go strait to ff
 
Assuming that the 27-80 lens you refer to is actually a 28-80mm then on a crop sensor body (xxxD/xxD range) the actual field of view is nearer to 49mm.

As Phil says depending on what you are shooting that could cause a serious short fall in your ability to capture your subject.
