Is the Canon 450D a worthy opponent to the Nikon D5000?

I ask because i can get a 450D much cheaper than a D5000 and was wondering if it was worth the extra expense?

The Nikon D5000 was released during last year and is still a current model the 450D was released in 2008 and has since been replaced twice with the 500D and the current 550D. That is the reason for the price difference between the 2.

Thing is, i really dont want to spend a huge amount of money! I did have the chance to buy a 2nd hand D450 for £379

That is a lot for a 450D I paid £350 a few month ago and I got 3 memory cards, battery grip and 2 additional batteries with it.

Awesome but not worth more than £350 2nd hand?

What about the 350D? That a worth contender 2nd hand?

USED Canon EOS 350D With Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC £235 2nd hand. That a good price guys?

Well it's not a BAD price. Depends on condition of camera and lens!
I have seen them go for less, but not much.
Ask a few questions, condition, age, how many actuations (not sure you can do an acurate count, but if continuous file numbering is used it will give an approximation) is it boxed, manual, disks with it. If all are present, it is usually a good sign that it has been looked after.
The main thing is, if you are happy with it, then go for it!

It is from a camera shop. They are offering a 6 month warranty too.

Been told that the new Sony A290 is out next week!! That is going to be £390 brand new. I won't dive in yet though as i want to see what it is like.

Don't bother with the 350d mate, you will only want the 450d straight after.

Well I have had the 350d for 2 years and never wanted the 450d! One piece of advice I was given was 'spend your money on good glass, not the body' I see no need to upgrade as I am a keen amature and it does everything I want!
Of course if you make a living out of photography, then upgrades are a must!!

I guess you are right but as i don't have a DSLR at the moment i want to make sure i get the right one for my budget and uses. I really am loathed to spend over £400 on one. I know i will probably need extras in the future but my initial outlay is budgeted at £400.

The new Sony is going to be around the £390 mark.

What will you get with it? Dont forget lens etc! At least with the second hand Canon you can start straight away.
How much does the extra equipment cost? At least with the Canon most add ons are well established and readlily available (and cheap!)
All questions you need to ask!

I had the 350, upgraded to the 450, it's far better.
Then just concentrate on some good glass.
The 450d will be more than sufficient for your needs.

(350d, one of the things is the screen is far to small.)

I have been very happy with my 450D, and I bought it after I bought my 500D. I don't think I would buy anything older than the 450D. Keep an eye on the classifieds section on here people look after their kit and you can pick up some bargains. You need to look at other things than price, do you like how it feels in your hands, can you reach the controls easy do you like the weight, additional support for lenses, batteries etc.

I have a 450d and it's really good. I have no complaints and it is a very capable camera. It's the lenses that make the difference!

I will be selling mine soon to make way for the 550d as it's the best of both worlds, Loads of up to date features, great sensor and metering system all bundled in a small light package roughly the same size and weight as the 450d.

Have a look through the classifieds on here for some good buys. It seems most prople take care of their kit and it is less risky than ebay too as most people on here seem to be very honest with descriptions.

Ideas of costs?

2nd user of course!

300D + grip + lens £150ish
350D + lens £175-£200 ish
400D + lens £250 ish
450D + lens £375 ish

The 450D is a cracking good camera and superb to start with. It should do everything you need and more for some time.

Hope this helps.

Been offered one for £375 at my local camera shop with 6 month warranty. Very tempted indeed!!

Seems a sensible price to me considering you will be getting a warranty too!

Cheers

Save yourself £105 and read your PM!

Edit: That's for the 450d body, no lens. You can get a 18-55 IS lens for £40-60 used!

£363 for a new refurbished one from digigood on ebay.

We bought one (body only) for training £309 months ago came in white box and appeared to be brand new.

KoolPC is buying new so mine will be up in the for sale section soon at £270 inc all accessories and new spare Battery.

As an ex owner of a 450 it was a very capable camera, and one thing I have really appreciated since upgrading to a dinosaur, is that it is a fast camera. Menu operations and general operations are delay-free. The screen is a nice size and the camera has an RGB histogram.

Nothing wrong with the 350D. Great little camera and can easily get them for £150-£160. Hook it up with a decent ens and you can match the quality along side better models.
