I absolutely love my Canon 50 1.4 but while recently browsing some reviews I was really surprised to see it rated more highly than the 50 1.2L. I can’t quite figure this out. Does it simply come down to value for money or is the 1.4 actually better? Anyone used both?

I have no intention of giving up my 1.4 as it suits me perfectly. Just interested why the L-series may be rated less highly.

only got the 1.4

but i vaguely remember hearing the 1.2 is a bit soft and fragile. obviously with the added cost.

it was a while ago though and might not be true:thumbs:

couplea members on here have 50Ls and the pics ive seen have been luverly

and tbh the 50 1.4 is pretty darn delicate and a bit of a pain with its damageable focusing mechanism - nb I love mine to death

I had both of them at the same time but disposed of the f/1.4.....there was almost 1 stop of vignetting shooting wide open on a FF body. The 50L still vignettes but much less obvious. The f/1.4 focusses much more quickly but looses out in the contrast and bokeh stakes (subjective, I know).
My 50L also suffers from the infamous focus shift problem but it's something you learn to work around.

Interesting. It sounds fairly balanced in that case. Do you find yourself shooting wide open with the 1.2 that often?

To avoid the focus shift then I generally use it wide open or f/2 upwards if portraits are the thing. If the subject is more than a couple of metres away then any aperture is fine. Generally I prefer the 85L on a full frame body but they all have to be used sometimes.
