Canon 50 f/1.8 or the Canon 50 f/1.4 for 4 times the price?!
Also considering the canon 35mm f/2 but the question still stands between the 50s

Personally would go for the 1.8, for what it costs you can then decide if its the lens for you and if it isnt you have not invested a huge amount of cash,

The 1.4 gives you an extra stop, but IMHO its not a stop worth having as its pretty soft at 1.4

For what they cost the 1.8 should really bew in the bottom of everyones kit bag.
 
Have you seen the price of the 1.2? :)

Depends on what you'll be using it for, and how much use it's going to get...
 
Have had 2 1.8's and i can vouch for them being very, very fragile. Best bet is to keep a lens hood attached at all times to stop the front getting knocked, even then its in the bag!

I replaced the second one with the 1.4 and it is a far superior bit of kit. It is better at 1.8 than either of the 1.8's i had and razor from f2 upwards. Focusses really fast and quiet. If your budget allows, i would recommend it every day of the week.

If you're on a cropped sensor I would suggest the 35mm, I find 50mm perfect on full frame, but too long on the smaller sensors.

Yeah I use a 550D but a 50 mm would be roughly the equivalent of an 85 mm on FF
 
I've got a 50mm 1.8 and wouldn't have it in the bottom of my bag for sure. It spends too much time on the cam to bury it. As for it being better on a crop or full frame I'm not worried. I've got a 7D now but my 5D MkII is coming on friday, so I get the best of both worlds.
