I am thinking of getting one of these. Any views on how good they are, or should I just pay out a bit more and get a lens, EF-S 60mm or similar...

The cheapest way to get a closer focusing distance, the quality is ok in the centre but not at the edges. Depends what lenses you have, but you could get extension tubes from Kenko which would do a better job depending on the lens, or top option is a dedicated macro lens like tamron 90mm.

I have used these in the past and you can get very good results from them.

A set of 4 usually costs about £10-£15 on Ebay.

The 60mm f/2.8 macro is a great lens but its about £200 second hand.
