Canon 500d IS kit lens

Does it normally make a noise when focussing (with or without AF on)? Feel a bit daft asking really but used it for the first time in ages this week and I'm sure it used to make a slight noise before when shooting but there is nothing now

It's probably the Image Stabilisation, although I've never owned that lens to be certain.

Try turning the IS off and see if it still makes the noise.

Most IS systems make a small amount of rustling noise as they work. I can hear my 100-400L going if I listen closely to it.

The IS on my 100-400 is pretty loud, especially when shooting at 400mm. I gather it's very normal for the lens, but it really surprised me when I first tried it out!

Thanks for the replies, I've tried it every which way and nothing, the more I think about the more I'm sure there was a slight whirring sound so I will take it back to the shop and see what they say.

Sounds very much like the IS to me, some are noisier than others, but nothing to worry about.

Quite easy to see if its working or not, take two similar shots (one with the IS on) hand held with a slowish shutter speed, so maybe something like 55mm at 1/15.

If they are both equally blurred its probably gone wrong or if you can notice the difference alls right with the world and the IS

When I first tried mine in a quite room I thought it was a little loud, but when I'm outside I barely notice it.

Yes it does, I've only had it about 4mths (from new) and it's hardly been used and also I'm one of the unfortunate ones that has hands as steady as a rock until I pick up a camera!
