Hi. New on here so please be gentle! I have a Canon 400D and mainly take photos of my kids. I have been interested recently by the developments in DSLRs with the introduction of video. I appreciate that it not really what DSLRs are about but for me it would be really useful in terms of not carrying the camcorder about. So, interested to here what people think and particularly from anyone who has got the new 500D about what it is like. Also dont have big investment in kit so also interested to here about Nikon D5000 and D90

Thanks

Andy

It seems a lot of money to spend just to go from a 400d to a 500d and just for the video You would also benefit from the Digic IV processor which is a big improvement on earlier processors). Personally I would spend my money on glass or if you really must have the video go to the Canon 5D Mark II or an equivalent level Nikon with video (Sorry not knowledgeable about Nikon models):) .

It would seem nobody is shooting video or nobody has got a 500D yet?

Well it is about £400 dearer than the 450d and all it brings is video (20fps at that) and 15mp vs 12mp (big deal)
I'd say if you already have a camcorder just use that and get a 450d.....unless you are unhappy with the camcorder in some way (i suppose the lens isnt as cool as some canon options, but meh)

i got one from amazon, but its my first dslr so i cant comment too much.

it does do 30fps at 720p, but yes only 20fps at 1080p. i think it might just be limited by the firmware so not sure if there will be an upgrade/hack further down the track

Has anybody got one yet? I see they have now come down in price quite significantly. £619 with kit lens

Have a look on YouTube for example videos - there are quite a few around already. Make sure you watch the HD versions though. There are also previews of the 500d on the interweb.

Only you can decide if you want to fork out the cash for it!

George.

I was going to upgrade from my 1000d but then I decided to invest in better lenses. and when I feel that my photography skills need a better camera (it's gonna take a while: )I would rather go for 40d or above. As for video you can always get flip camcorder or something similar

I upgraded from the 400d to the 500d in June. The camera is great for kids shots, and also the ability to take short movies at their parties etc is worth having. Videos are better at 720p. The only problem I have with it is on the landscape side of things. I have yet to get a really sharp landscape shot - when compared to some of those taken with my 400d. I am trying to get other people's opinions on this in case it's just me, or whether I should take it back for checking.
