Hi i have today treated myself to a canon 500d and would like to buy another lens for it
i have made the step up from a canon g10 to hopefully take some better pictures
i have looked at a few reviews for the tamron 70-300mm and it seems ok for the money
can any body suggest a simular lens up to say 250-00 which has better results than the tamron above
thanks terry

Hi Terry, around the same price range you can pick up a Sigma 70-300mm APO lens which I find to be brilliant for the money, you can get a cheaper one without the APO designation also which has slightly lower image quality too.

If you are willing to spend a wee bit more you could pick up the Canon 55-250 IS lens which a lot of folks have said good things about and it has the added benefit of image stabilization .

Hope that helps a bit.

Tommy.

Hi Terry,

I upgraded to the 500d in June, and after a lot of reading on here, opted for the Canon 28-135 lens. Both took some getting used to, but I am very happy with this all-rounder, giving sharp results for portrait & landscapes.

I'm presuming you have the 18-55mm kit lens, so another lens would really depend on what you expect to be photographing
Probably best to carry on with what you have for now until you know what you require

You could find a wide angle lens is your next buy or maybe a macro lens, there again could be a long zoom or telephoto

So many possibilities and no point buying something that you will only end up selling again very quickly

Personally prefer something of a compromise and will be using a 24-70mm on mine along with a fixed 100mm Macro.
Might one day get a wide angle along the lines of a 10-20mm, but from past experience not likely to get much use.

yes i have the standard kit lens
i dont think i will need a macro or wide angle lens
looks like the canon with the is will be a better option

I've got the 500D and just bought the 55-250 - looks pretty decent enough from the limited use I've given the 55-250. Nice range on it, and it's got IS :)

Also bought the Sigma 105 Macro for the bargain price of £250 from Jessops (but you don't want a macro - so ignore that ;))
