Canon 500mm Bag Options

Has talk equipment turned into the classifieds?

The bag is a Lowepro Pro Trekker 600AW which I picked up off Fleabay (as new) for £180 quite recently.

And i've done some good old hikes fully loaded up with that bag, the comfort is good unlike some bags that are more about storage rather than wearing.

As there seems to be a few big lens users in this thread can I ask what you tend to use when shooting with them. I recently purchased a 250-600mm f5.6 which weighs in at just under 6kg so hand held is not an option. I would prefer a monopod with a decent ball head (or similar) but never having used something this front heavy I really have no idea what I am doing. Presuming I also need some sort of plate as the tripod mount is humungus.

A good tripod and gimbal.

I use a gitzo 5 series tripod & a wimberley mkii gimbal.
 
I use a Thinktank airport accelerator for my ef600. Airline friendly and room for 2 bodies with grips, 2 converters, 2 wide angle, 4 batteries + charger plus laptop, though I personally wouldn't want to carry all of it.

Do I use some sort of plate on the tripod collar foot before mounting straight onto a monopod?

Only good for 2.5kg according to the spec sheet ... my lens is 6kg so don't think I would risk that.

I use a 400mm f/2.8 with TC straight onto the monopod but some people use a QR plate, its horses for courses and down to personal choice but i shoot sport, if i were shooting wildlife i would use a tripod and Gimbal set up

Agreed. This is the first back pack that I can honestly say is "easy" to carry as long as you spend time adjusting it properly.

Once adjusted the weight is correctly born by your hips rather than shoulders making gear lugging a far more pleasant experience.

The only downside for me is the fact that the bag is so huge I just fill it with a ton of gear lol!

i have 3 bags that can fit the 500mm F4.
1). Lowepro Flipside 400. it fits the lens snugly(reverse hood) without body attached,still has small space for 1 series body by the side.it was actually meant for my smaller lenses as i don't really use it with the 500mm.
2). Lowepro Lens Trekker 600AW. this fit the lens(reverse hood) with 1 series body attached just nice. no other lens can be added in to it.
3). Vanguard Xcenior 62T. This is a very big trolley bag that can fit the 500mm(reverse hood) with 1 series body attached with much spare space for other lenses like 70-200mm,24-70mm,flash.
