Canon 500mm f4 is mk 1

Is the canon 500mm f4 is mk1 still worth getting im seeing them as cheap as £2000 , i know canon doesnt services them anymore but its still around £3000 cheaper than a mk 2 one . is it worth the gamble or not if i picked up a good one ?

It won't be a gamble but you will not go wrong with this lens... check the history and inspect in hand, try out on your camera prior to committing.

I loved mine but had to give it up due to hernia carrying it around. If the auto focus motor goes you may have problems getting it repaired.

For 2000 I would be tempted to. They may or may not service it depending on parts required or if you can source a donor lens. Good healthy copy should be a good start particularly if you are a light user, and I would say good insurance cover is a must.
