Yes
I've been asked to photograph a professional footballer player at the local astroturf pitch on Wednesday night.
(He's helping coach some of the youngsters)

I went up there tonight & got roughly 1/350-1/400 at f2.8 with 3200 iso.
I was hoping that someone would have been there to try on, but lucked out.

What I would like to know is would I get decent/sharp action images at 3200iso?
Has anyone shot at 3200iso under floodlights? & what were the results like?

Anyway I will be using the 50D, a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 & a Canon 70-200 f2.8.
I also have a 430EX & stofen.

Any help/pointers gratefully received.

Regards Spence

They will not be as good as the Nikon D300 but should be usable, although not shot at that ISO for sports I have in a nightclub.

What size prints do you need? 7x5" to A5 should be ok at ISO3200 on the 50D.

I own a d300 and wouldnt want to be using 3200 unless i really had too.

Not knowing who the pics are for, and whether you have been asked to get a particular 'type' of shot:

  • Use a monopod if you can get your hands on one
  • Take any close range portrait shots at a lower ISO/flash if needed
  • Use a slower shutter speed to deliberately try to get some movement blur in a shot
  • Try and take any action shots under the floodlit areas again at an ISO lower than 3200

You will get pretty soft results. The main issue i find is AF performance.

I have been having to use 6400 iso to get a decent shutter speed on recent flood lit games. But these are very poorly lit pitches and havent really produced any images i consider good.

However if its for a newspaper this will hide a multitude of sins.

Thanks Peter.

Cheers Cyprio, I'll take the monpod in case.

Thanks dunganick,
They are only for the website.

Many thanks for all your help.

By the looks of the weather I'm going to have my work cut out.
Will post the results later.

Thanks again.

Really struggled with the light, even started to chuck it down for about 30 mins.

Cole Skuse (Bristol City player) spent the whole night talking/training with my daughters football club, & what a great bloke. He seemed to enjoy it as much as the kids.

Any C&C most definitely required, as I will be doing it again soon & would like nail some better shots.
Anyway I took quite a few & here are some of the "better" ones.

One thing your EXIF has “© Spencer White, all copywrites”
Is should be Copyright

Thank you for pointing that out Chaz, :bonk:
Now changed.

Thanks for the crit.

I'm not sure why you are shooting at small apertures like f9 and f10 in low light? If you have done it so you can reduce your shutter speed to get the blurred effect of the children running around, thats fair enough but I would have dropped the ISO down instead reducing the aperture to get a better quality image.

I'm no expert, just throwing around some ideas so feel free to ignore them if you wish.

It was just a quick grab shot & I completely forgot about the high ISO.:whistling:
I do like the shot, even though its a little noisey.:D

I don't know what you were worrying about... look fine to me.

One tip for the future, if you have highlight tone priority (or active-D as Nikon call it), turning this off can reduce noise at higher ISO's...
